i know this has been asked in the past, but i cant seem to find the topic. anyways i'm looking to crochet some of my loose hairs and basically tiddy up my dreads a little. i bought a hook but i think its a little to big and it doesnt seem to be working. what is a good sized hook that you guys used or have used it he past. i cant seem to find the smaller ones at my local crafts store, so if you have any links to where i can buy one online that would be best. thanks in advance.

I got mine at Hobby Lobby and it is a size 10 or a 1.3mm. It takes a little getting used to but now I can breeze through without a mirror.

It depends on the thickness of your dread and hair.

But anyhow, for general maintenance and tightening I suggest to go for an 8 or 10 (thinner dreads, maybe 10).

For general loose hair maintenance a 10 or 12 will be good.

Btw, the conversion for the sizes are (Japanese size)
      #8 = 0.90mm
      #10 = 0.75mm
      #12 = 0.60mm

Starting out will be quite a chore as your gotta learn how to angle your dread and how to angle your hands to deal with the back and side dreads. But after you get the hang of it, it will be a breeze.

thanks a lot guys. yeah i've tried a few times, but like i said i though the hook was too large and a was struggling at it. i am confused on the sizes. do i get a small one (0.90mm, 0.75mm, etc . . . ) or a large one 8,10,12. also i've search online and on this tribe and i still cant seem to find one online that i like. i know someone posted a link here a few months back. i'll have to search more.

          Yeah you are confused!!

The numbering are just reference numbers. You might want to pay more attention to the actual size in mm.
So a Tulip #12 hook is actually 0.6mm in size. I use that most of the time.

I use Tulips, for reference you can follow this link (www.tulip-japan.co.jp/kyoutsu...e.html). It's last picture at the bottom of the page. The steel crochet hook without any handles. Cheap as hell too!!

i actually wasn't as confused as i thought i was. i realize the size of the hook refers to mm, i was just wondering where i can order one online because my local crafts shop does not sell them that small, which is why I was looking to find a link online.
