When I get a maintaince done the chick who does my hair ties strings at the base of the root or new growth. This seem to help the hair lock but only if I leave the string in for a few weeks? Can anybody elaborate on this subject because the strings are a pain in the neck to try and cut out I am not sure if I want to get the strings put back in.

I go to a place where she weaves the hairs at the base in to exsisting locks. It worked perfectly the first time, I just had it done again with not as great results, but still the only place i've found that could do maintanence without product on "non-african" hair. My hair is really curley and locked on its own 7 years ago...

Maybe you can find a hair-dresser/Locktician in your hood that can do the same. I'm pretty happy with the results.

    One.

Why cut them out? use string that is the same color as your hair and just let it knot in like it was a strand of hair. Rubber bands will often break your hair which will cause more loose hair and more maintaince that needs to be done.

i never new that people put strings and weaving and things like that to make dreads, or that so many people go to salons and have maintenance done on um. I've had my dreads for 3 years and i just kinda let um do what they want, but people ask me if im growing um out, to get rid of um, they are not super tight up to the scalp, sometimes i'll put in a little effort in myself and try to roll um around or something, but mostly just let um ride:)
