Out of curiosity, which show had a dreadhead on it?

While having dreads gives me confidence in my personal life, it kind of depletes my confidence when it comes to work. For example, I was taking a course for office and business administration, and then decided halfway through that I wanted dreads. Since then I've avoided trying too hard for jobs of this nature, since I've convinced myself that I've ruined my chances and have wasted my education because of the dreads. Okay that sounded a bit dramatic, but yeah... I'm concerned about employment too... especially in a more corporate environment.... and this thread doesn't help my fears! That's awful that he won't hire you back, especially after 5 years of hard work!

I thought I'd just let everyone know what's going on with this since it's been so popular. My old boss still refuses to even talk to me about my job. He just told my manager not to hire me back. I was able to get a nannying job though, so at least I'm not jobless. Looking back, I'm glad it happened, because I realize how crappy of a company they really are and its only getting worse. They are starting to rip there own customers off and I don't want to work for a company like that anyway. =]

You have to ask yourself which is most important...your dreads or your job. Only you can determine that. We all have issues with society not liking us for one reason or another...for some...the object of condemnation can quickly be rectified (like how you wear your hair, which can be easily cut)…for others it's not that easy. You need to look deep inside and ask yourself if your dreads are worth it. If you decide to keep them...you will have to develop thick skin to deal with the negativity and faith that everything will work out in the end.

Good Luck,

Interesting.

I've had people stop me (especially older folks) to tell me how much they dig my hair. Funny thing is, the really young kids are always shocked by it (though they get used to it quickly).

haven't posted in a while. the site's been down and I just finally remembered to check it out. I've had the same problem with my dreads for interviews. Still w/o work. Have hard a couple internships though. Have one this summer so we'll see how it goes. That being said, I'm strongly consider cutting my dreads considerably. They are quite long now. I've had them for almost 10 yrs. last yr i cut them to middle of back, but I'm thinking about cutting them shorter as I'm still not quite ready to let them go just yet; however, I think the time is coming soon. Sorry for threadjacking by I didn't to vent. Would love to hear your guys opinions.

yah, i've got to support Laa's point here...

As a dreadhead, you are increasing the risk that you will be subjected to more public attention than non-dreadheads. Employment is an issue. My personal experience has shown that if you keep them well-maintained, clean AND smelling clean...couple this with a down-to-earth confidence in your abilities and your reasons for wearing dreadlocks, than it will be easier to dissolve the immediate judgment and fear/discomfort many people have when initially interacting with someone who wears dreads (esp. white people...tis true).

As for court, in this case with the fire spinning, stereotypes are stereotypes. There are plenty of poi people who spin that do not have visible or extreme body modification [hair included] and visa versa. Again, if you have made a strong internal commitment to your dreadlocks, then I'd say tidy up, appear confident and accountable, and show some respect - both for the culture and community to which you belong - and the institution of government by whom we are all subject to.

cheers, friends!

I definately agree with Laa. I don't think it would be a problem to keep your dreadlocks in if you really clean them up and give them some pretty thorough maintenance. You can always dress respectfully and be well spoken and appear to be respectful of the law.

I really don't think I would cut my dreads off if I were in the same predicament. Don't be ashamed of them. My dreadlocks have given me so much confidence and when I have to go somewhere nice, I usually put a nice wrap/headband on, but you can still clearly see that they are there. I do understand that it is more difficult for men to style their dreads neatly with wraps and that, but you can have a look on the web and sure some ppl on here would have some good styles for guys.

Your disposition and manner are going to matter in court (as well as any previous offences) more than your hair.

I hate to be the one to say this, but I really do believe it needs to be stated clearly...

Your employers have just as much right to not hire you for your hair as you have to wear it that way. One of the reasons it is suggested to take the time and really think about why you want them to begin with is to see if you are mentally prepared to deal with the societal effects of wearing what is still considered a controversial hairstyle. Yes, dreads are your choice, but they might not be the choice of your employers. Sometimes it comes down to personal freedom vs a paycheck. It's your choice to make in the end. But please don't make it sound like discrimination. Dress code and personal appearance in the workplace exists for a reason. We are all accountable for our actions. Freedom of expression doesn't mean freedom without repercussion.

And pertaining to court, have you considered having your dreads washed and maintained before your court date? If you clean yourself up and present yourself as an intelligent, decent, and well spoken human being, they're not going to care about your hair. (And for the love of pete, please get a permit when you burn. Illegal fire play is what makes it harder for us to get permits!) Never underestimate the power of a humble attitude and a clean shirt.

I'm sorry to hear that! My buddy just had to cut off his 1 year old dreads for court. Except he's being charged with a few drug related felonies. I can't imagine cutting mine!!

Well the judge may not look kindly on the fresh dreads...They look ratty because they are brand new.
Plus I am going to court for spinning fire on a beach where fire was not permitted - "possession of
an incendiary device without permit"....So yeah I don't need the judge thinking that I'm any more of a
"dirty hippie" so to speak.

mwell... I work in a vegan restaurant in the most colorful part in the most colorful town in my country so my bosses just loved my dreads when I showed up with them. Tho... another (higher ranked) employed are trying to make me stop playing reggae music and especially Bob Marley. He don't want the place to be a "veggie-hippie place" and let me "scare of" all the "straight costumers".

I know it sucks from a personal standpoint, but an employer does have the right to dictate the appearance pf their employees. It sucks, but it's true.

Best thing to do if you want to keep them is move on to another job that will hire you with them, but it's always wise to check with your employer before making a drastic change to your appearance next time.

I got fired from a middle school teaching position for having dreads. It didn't feel too good. Apparently appearance is more important than work ethic. Oh well!

I refuse to cut them. The owner is a chauvinistic pig anyway- so I guess I'd probably be better off getting a new job. It makes me mad though because there are managers in the company with visible forearm tattoos. But I'm not allowed to work because I have a non-mainstream hairstyle. We'll see what happens!

That is horrible. I'm so sorry to hear that has happened. Are you actually going to cut your hair to keep your job or are you just going to look for something better?

I haven't had it happen before as I only got my dreadies on new years day. I have a 15 week old baby and thought that this time was as best as any for me to get dreads. It always stays in the back of my mind though whether I will have trouble finding work when I am ready to go back into the workforce. I understand the whole "no dreadlocks" policy in certain working industries but c'mon a swimming pool retailer? Your dreads look fairly neat and pretty clean to me. Hope everything works out for you.

I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this happen to them. I've worked at a swimming pool retailer for the past 5 summers. I can honestly say I'm one of the best employees they have at the store I work at. In December, I got dreads! (yay!! =] ) well- i went in today and apparently the owner found out about my hair and told my manager he doesn't want me working for the company unless I get a hair cut. I'm still furious but was wondering if this happened to anyone else.
