I'm ok with it, have done the research, but haven't seen much info about dreadlocks for little (white) kids.
I have no previous experience with dreadlocks, so I'm reaching out to the tribe.
Is there any reason (physical, emotional) why I shouldn't dread her little head?
Thanks & Peace

Re: My 5-year-old wants dreads...
Tue, August 4, 2009 - 7:54 PMI don't really see any actual problem, long as she's aware of the effort that will have to go into them...unfortunately dreads are not an instant perfect do...they do require maintenance. The only other thing, is other kids. Kids can be mean. is she likely to cop any ridicule from others her own age? Other than that, I don't think there's much of an issue.
re: little white kid dreads...you'd go about the process and maintenance exactly the same as for caucasian adult hair.

Re: My 5-year-old wants dreads...
Sat, August 29, 2009 - 9:43 AMMy 5 year old has dreads! She'd been asking for an entire year, consistently, so I finally made them for her. It was much faster and easier than when I did my own. I wash her hair 3 times a week now, and when it dries I give each a brief palm roll. She doesn't have much patience for more, but it seems to be working very well. I should post pictures!!! They are SO darling on her... She had pretty baby fine hair to begin with, and it still worked fine. About a week ago, she said she had a dream that her dreads brushed out and she was scared that when she woke up, it would be true. She loves them! -

Sun, August 30, 2009 - 3:50 PMawww, your little girl sounds awesome!!
i think that, like with adults, dreads on a child could be a great learning tool for patience, personal higiene, and feeling secure in who you are as a person in the face of adversity and ridecule.
much respect to you beksta, and your little dread lady!

Re: My 5-year-old wants dreads...
Mon, August 31, 2009 - 1:02 PMI just posted pictures of her (and my) dreads under group photos. There is one spot by her forehead that is so baby-fine that it's not dreading. Maybe we'll just let it do it's own thing...

Re: My 5-year-old wants dreads...
Wed, September 16, 2009 - 1:40 PMI think its awesome , kids will make fun of you for one reason or another .. if your child likes em and cares for them correctly I say why not.... but be careful around other kids in school headlice in grade school is an issue and once infested good luck getting the lil buggers out of your locks -

Fri, September 18, 2009 - 10:19 PMI had thought about the lice thing, but we homeschool, so our chances are much more slim than the public crowd.
