Can Someone Please Explain Shrinkage?

I am just really curious on the what when where and why's of dread shrinkage. My locks seem to be getting shorter so I wanted to see if there is anything I can do to prevent this from happening. Does the hair seem to ball up in one particular spot and make a bump inside of the dread? Please Help. God Bless

Hi Victoria...I feel your pain over the shrinkage. Your dreads are getting shorter because your hair is doing what it is suppose to be doing when it's's locking up. The bumps, lumps and "S" shapes are due to one side of the dread locking faster than the other. Hang in took mine almost a year and 1/2 to finally stop shrinking and once your length starts again, the bumps and lumps will finally straighten out.

Oh, one more seemed like the more I washed, the more the shrinkage. It got to the point I was only washing once a month but now I'm back to twice a week.

It's similar to a t-shirt shrinking after washing.

Your dreads are experiencing the same thin. Some parts of the dreads shrink and some don't, hence the weird shapes and curls. But the shrinkage will eventually stop, just like a t-shirt, after a few washes.
