I bought a bar of peppermint like you guys reccommend and hate to say it sucked.. left my hair soft and loose at the root.. my dreads are only 5-6 weeks old and locked up awesome excepy at the root ... Maybe some of you that compain of dry brittle locks could benefit but not me... I dont even have good soap to compare it to. Ive been using David Babaii wild aid a natural sulfate free shampoo that is sold localy and its way better.Ive been meaning to try dreadhead brand but dont have 30 bucks on my card to order it... So untill I do I will continue what Im doing..

Re: doc Bronners too damn soft
Wed, October 21, 2009 - 10:07 PM'5-6 weeks old' may be the key. when i started out my dreadlocks, everytime i washed them they would improve in some ways, get worse in others. when my dreadlocks were so new they weren't really 'locked' - they were just backcombed, in the process of locking. they seemed good when i worked on them, but then they seemed to come undone a little each time i washed.
you just have to work on them after each wash i'm afraid, at least until they get more mature. i wouldn't blame it on the soap quite yet, but if you're having good luck with the other stuff you're using, continue. however i think it's a problem with the age of the dreads, not so much the soap. keep doing the root rubbing or whatever it's called and keep locking the roots.
another thing ! you should try the liquid soap instead of the bar soap, see if you like it better.
i've used the dreadhead stuff for 2 years (until today- i tried the dr bronners peppermint liquid castile soap and it was fantastic) and whenever i didn't put enough soap in my hair, it came out badly. a little slick, you could tell it didn't get the buildup of oils out of my hair. but when i just poured the stuff on and frothed up my whole head, once i rinsed it off my hair felt so clean and wonderful.
i'm pretty sure a bar soap isn't going to provide as much as a liquid, since you can apply liquid in larger quantities, so another possibility is simply not using enough soap.
so, those are my suggestions! try dr bronners liquid soap, and keep dreading ^-^

Thu, October 22, 2009 - 7:19 AMI agree with Alyx... your dreads are very young. Be patient and keep working on them all the time. And I would also definitely recommend the liquid Dr. Bronners. It's my favorite that I've ever used. It may seem expensive, but it will last a long, long time.
Be patient and give your baby dreadies the time and effort they need to mature~

Re: doc Bronners too damn soft
Thu, October 29, 2009 - 10:52 AMThis is exactly what I do. Wash with my reg dread soap, then go over mine with a little bit of doc bronners. A little goes a long way! I normally add some water to a few drops of soap and that's all I need. Also, rinsing them with really cold water right before you get out of the shower helps make sure that all the Dr. Bronner's leaves behind is it's amaaazzing smell! -

Re: doc Bronners too damn soft
Mon, November 2, 2009 - 10:00 PMyahhh....i'm gonna throw in my 2 cents and say the doc bon's might be great for mature dreads. i was using straight up non.scented bar soap once a week for the first 8 months or so, then switched. my hair is super coarse naturally, so my locks were solid [save the roots] at about 7 months.
keep patient, and experiment to find out what works best for your babies.

Re: doc Bronners too damn soft
Sat, November 7, 2009 - 1:31 PMi've been using dr bronner's on my dreads since the beginning (3.5 yrs ago)...but after reading through various threads, i thought i would give dreadhead hq shampoo a try, mostly to try to tighten up my roots, and i'd been a little suspicious that it was leaving some residue...well-- i just washed my hair today for the first time with the dreadhead hq shampoo, and OMG!!! my hair feels sooooo much lighter, even after getting right out of the shower! i'm so amazed!! lol i must have had so much residue built up in my dreads...i do miss the peppermint smell of dr bronners...but i'm definitely switching to dreadhead, at least for a while.
