exstentions dyeing and felting

topic posted Sun, February 24, 2008 - 9:34 PM by  [pH]
My dreads are 4months old now and i have been thinking about the length of them. I like them how they are but i thin i would love them if they were longer but im not sher about how old they should be before i put in extensions, and what are you opinions about dread heads that arnt all natural.
there getting a lil funky lookin right now and i had talked to one person on another post about how long i should wait until felting but i would like a cupol more opinions about it.
i have also heard that if you bleach/dye your dreads it can help them lock up a bit faster. this is also something that i dont quite know about.
If you can help me with this it would be greatly appreciated. esp is you have had dreads for a long time.

thanks in advanced

i'm no hair expert, so i cant vouch for how good bleach is for your hair... but... i bleached my hair a few months back and it helped my dreads tighten up ALOT. my hair was ultra healthy before i dreaded it, so i think the drying out from the bleach worked wonders on them. on the other hand, since they dreaded up alot more, i got a good inch or two of shrinkage. so if you're concerned about the length to begin with, maybe bleaching wont be the way to go. if you do decied to bleach, the key is to RINSE RINSE RINSE. you dont want that icky stuff staying in your lovely locks!

    happy dreading!

its not that im worried about the length but that im to inpatient and i want longer dreads.
and i know that dreads shrink as they lock up, so thats not a bad thing.
      how old are yours?

my locks didnt really start to shrink untill i bleached them. well, maybe they did and i just didnt notice it untill i bleached and they shrank all at once. my hair was almost down to my butt when i dreaded them, and now they're a few inches past my shoulders. they're now almost 9 and a half months old. i bleached them when they were almost 7 months, i think. it really helped, tho. i know many dreadies out there dont reccomend it because its chemical and not natural, but i dont really mind. i love my babies! haha.

Just be careful of commercial hairdyes...I'm not talking about bleach, but other colours....a LOT of them have in-built conditioners which will actually work against your hair dreading-up...If you wanted colour, Henna dyes would be the way to go...

yeah you could most certainly get them online...and health food stores etc...Henna is a natural dye (used for hair and body art), a plant, that has been used for centuries...It also (from my experience years ago) has the tendancy to dry out the hair rather than condition it. Perfect for dreadlocks, I would think....

From my experience (and I had my own henna business for years before going back to school, I'm not just talking out my ass here) henna is very very hard to use on dreadlocks. After you cake the henna on, let it sit and then wash it out, you're still going to have henna powder caught in the dreads, and when they dry out, it is going to get everywhere, and suddenly your pillows will have brown spots, and you'll be shedding what looks like a combination of flea dirt and dandruff for the next couple of washes.
Manic panic and punky color only make bright colors if you bleach first, but they'll give you some color on your natural hair, and they aren't drying and they are way less toxic than say, loreal or feria or one of those store brands. If all you want is a wash of red, I'd go that way.

    Hey PH,

Perming your dreads will loc them faster as well. If you're interested in using extensions I recomend using real hair (this can be quite expensive but worth it) because it's real it will last as long as your own hair and look better too or synthetic hair (can be cool but won't last that long...but could last long enough until your own hair gorws to a length you like).

I know how to create both and if your interested I can share with you how. I started mine with synthetic then removed them once my hair got long enough. Doing it yourself is harder for sure but can save you oodles of cash!...just shoot me a note on my home page. The process for both is time consuming and requires some skill (and slow breathing!) so if you don't have either I suggest you pay someone to do it for you (sometimes it's just so nice to let someone else do it!). I know the Hair Police are most proficient but also the most expensive but if you don't mind the investment I highly recomend them. They can be found in most major cities.

    Good luck!

i know how hard it is to be patient with growing hair but i think it's worth it. all-natural dreads are the best and you've already gone through the first 4 months (some of the hardest). also short dreads are cute -- and when you put them up they stick out and get all spikey looking. plus it's pretty sweet to go through all the stages of dreading and they'll be more fulfilling in the end.
i strongly suggest bleaching or dying and also going in the ocean (if you can) - these will make them shrink up but they will also make them thicker and more solid.
after a couple of months my dreads shrunk up to about half their size but after a year it's about back to it's original length.
so don't lose patients!! this is probably one of the most awkward times for your dreads and if you just stick it out you will have beautiful hair!
you can do it!! good luck :)
