Ugh. I can't believe there are still so many people who know nothing about dreads but think they do and go around spreading their misinformation to others.
For instance, today I was in my class at college and somehow the topic of dreadlocks came up (im not entirely sure how, I wasnt listening at first) and of course, that one story that I'm sure everyone around the world has heard about dreadlocks at one time or another came up, the one where the guy had the spider living in his dreadlocks, which turned into a nest when it's babies hatched. Lol, im not sure how true this is, but if it happened that dude must have had the Mangiest dreadlocks Ever.
Then the teacher got involved and was like, I used to know someone who knew a guy who meticulously washed his dreadlocks every single night, spent hours on them, but when he got the cut off they sliced them open and "they were full of bugs". He then proceeded to say, "Oh well, guess that's the price you pay for having dreadlocks".
Im the only person in my class with dreddies and I'm not sure if they forgot I was there or were trying to offend me, but it made me pretty angry. I just sat there quietly not saying a word. I really wanted to just get up, leave and go home for the day. But I didn't cause then they may have made something of it.
That guy probably shouldnt have washed his hair 'every night' being as dreads need hours to dry and it sounds like he went to bed with wet dreads so it was probably mildew inside the dreads rather than whatever else they reckon it was.
Fuck. I am SO tired of having to explain that dreadlocks are not dirty bug infested things. Goddamn. Ive had them for over a year and I don't scratch my head that much more than a person without dreads does, but I still feel really conscious when I do cause i think that people will look at me and think, oh she has dreads and is scratching, she obviously doesnt wash her hair and they must be full of bugs, rather than, oh her head itches she is a normal person.
I know I should be used to all the idiots and prejudice now but it still gets on my nerves.
On the other end of the scale, on sunday while at work, i was serving a customer and the dialogue was as follows:
lady customer:"ohh what have you done to your hair? curls?"
i turn my head so she can see as i have to wear them pulled back
lady customer: "dreadlocks! when did you get those?"
me: laughed and said "over a year ago"
lady customer: looked abashed and said "i hadnt even noticed im sorry!"
me: smiled indulgently
lady customer: "i like it though. they look really good!"
me: blushing "aww really? thank you!!"
so that was a nice change from the usual derogoratory remarks and stares :)

Re: sorry this is really long but needed to rant :S
Tue, November 3, 2009 - 10:41 AMDon't let it bother you. Either they were completely unaware of their environment (didn't realize you were standing there), didn't care that you were there, or had the conversation because you were there.
If they really believe all that crap, it's not likely a speech from you would change their view.
If they didn't, they were just trying to get a rise out of you.
So it was a joke or they were woefully uninformed. Either way, laughter is probably the best response. -

Re: sorry this is really long but needed to rant :S
Wed, November 4, 2009 - 11:41 AMYeah I usually don't let it bother me too much, just when it happens when Im in the same room it gets a little frustrating.
I don't think that they had the conversation on purpose but just the way the teacher insinuated that all people with dreadlocks have heaps of bugs in their hair in front of the whole class I actually felt a little embarrassed.
My other teacher is cool though, I'm the odd one in the class. He said that my "out-of-the-box" style of thinking was a good thing cause it would help me to go further, and he respects my individuality and actually encourages it.

Re: sorry this is really long but needed to rant :S
Tue, November 3, 2009 - 10:35 PMew i hate when people have stupid dreadlocks discussions right in front of me.
and one time i had this idiot say to me "i just don't know what to do with you, girl! i can't believe you let your hair get that way."
another time in an airport this lady actually asked my mum, who was with me, what i "was".
really.
she said "what is she?" (me)
what kind of question is that anyway? we were so confused.
when i first got dreadlocks, my friends told me, "we will help you comb them out, because that's what real friends do."
no, real friends accept them. but anyhow.
the amount of compliments i've received is far greater than the amount of ignorant comments.
i am complimented on my hair so often. it's so much more worth me having dreadlocks and get occasional weird comments than to have my old "normal" hair that was plain and annoying to deal with.
i've heard the spider story too, but it wasn't with dreadlocks.
it was some lady with a beehive hairstyle, or something... i dunno, it's probably crap o_O -

Re: sorry this is really long but needed to rant :S
Wed, November 4, 2009 - 11:48 AMHuh! Help you brush them out cause they are 'real' friends. Like you said, real friends accept them.
Mine were a little stunned when I got them, cause I'd talked about getting them for years and years and I guess they never thought I'd actually do it. But they were all really supportive.
When I first got them, my bf's mum apparantly said to him that I could use her scissors if I wanted to cut them off. But once she saw them she completely changed her mind and she said that I looked gorgeous and really suited them and that she thought girls looked better with them than boys. LOL. (my bf used to have them, but i think he looked fantastic!)
And my bf's sister got really excited about them and said that maybe she would get some too ^___^
it's nice to have the support of people you love
even my mum jumped on board. my dad wasnt so enthusiastic, but ive had them for over a year and he never says anything bad about them to me.
I know exactly what you mean, the positive compliments definitely outweigh the negative. And even if they didnt the bottom line is it's my hair and I love my dreadlocks. and yeah, my old hair frustrated me to no end, not curly, not straight, kinda frizzy, never wanted to behave eugh!
I LOVE it when little old ladies come up and say they love my hair. It always gives me such a buzz! -

Re: sorry this is really long but needed to rant :S
Thu, November 5, 2009 - 2:05 AMUgh what idiots....I hate that too...seems it's always the misinformation that gets spread like wildfire, and somehow becomes 'fact' :O LOL that spider thing is ridiculous, I've heard it from stacksa people, and like you said, they'd have to be the mangiest locks ever...and hell, even then, you would feel a spider in your locks!!! The ya get the whole "ppl with locks never wash their hair", and they just 'happen' cos ya too lazy to brush your hair (lol I wish! these babies took some hard work!)
I usually only get good comments - sure, there are some that are kinda :S about locks, but overall, most people are genuinely interested (and that's when I start preaching about dreadlock-truth lol!) I've had stacksa grannies so fascinated by my hair on public transport and in supermarket queues - even to the extent where they have a touch and even go through them to examine all the decorations - then we get talking about crocheting! ha!
People who are misinformed and feel no discomfort about their rudeness when a locked lass is in the room ...they have something wrong with them - seriously - would they do that for anything else? I mean, hell, would they start dissing gay people if they knew there were any in the room? NO. Cos they'd be too PC for all that...yet dreadlocks seem to be open-forum for anyone who has no idea what they're talking about. Ignorance is even worse than prejudice sometimes lol
I woulda stood-up and made myself known, and then proceeded to teach them a thing or two - make em real uncomfortable in their consciences LOL but that's me - philosophy major - I live to debate ;-)

Tue, November 10, 2009 - 3:19 PMyeahhh i used to get that junk all the time bout minee, and still do, but i take pride in teaching people about things they may be ignorant to , wether it be cuz theyre jerks or cuz theyre interested about it.
