frizz and loose hairs?

topic posted Sun, October 7, 2007 - 3:26 PM by  offlineKate *DeLuna*
hey there all

i am super appreciative of all that i have learned on this tribe, you all have really helped me take care of my locks....

they are about 3 months old now, and they are doing really well- they are tightening really quickly, but i am having trouble with a lot of frizz, especially around my scalp. i just can't quite manage to get my dreads to tighten at the root at all... a friend of mine with beautiful dreads has me kind of creating a little split at the root and pulling the dread through... she told me that i should do that every 6 weeks or so, but it isnt really making them that much closer to the root.... i was advised NOT to use rubberbands, but it seems some of you think that's a good idea... any other suggestions?

also, i have tried to crochet in loose hair and have found that REALLY hard. i have a super small crochet needle that i got at a beauty supply store for frosting, could it be TOO small?.... can anyone describe your method of crocheting?

thanks ya'all!

Try taking a wire (or something similar) and fold it in half so it makes a ">" shape. Stick the fold through the dread close to the base/scalp. Take the frizz that looks like it should be part of that dread and loop it between the dread and the fold in the wire (between the 2 wires) and then pull it through the dread. Keep repeating this moving slowly down the dread after each time until the frizz is gone.
I hope that made sense, Did it?
Mine are about 7 months old. The frizz has gotten less with time. I have only done this to 2 of them (might need to do it to a few more). It seemed to work pretty well for the 2 I did it on.

yep, mine are 2 months old and they're locking up nice and fast, I think in large part because I crochet the loose hairs back into them pretty devotedly (once a week, or every few weeks if I get lazy). My crochet hook is from a craft store, its for crocheting those little string doilies, I think. I grab the loose hairs, roll them in my fingers until they get all knotted up, and then I stick the hook through the nearest dread so that it pokes out near said loose hairs, wrap the hairs around 2 or 3 times, and then pull through. Then repeat until you get to the end. It makes them all firm and tight and neat looking. There isn't much to it really, besides patience. It gets easier and faster with practice. If you have a friend that crochet's, they'll probably be naturally good at it. blessings!

My hair took what felt like ages to really lock up well! And I had tons of 'loosy goosy's' as I've heard them been called. Just wanna say thanks to all the tips from all you guys! I started getting someone to help me sew in the friz with a large wool needle. That helped some. But what helped me the most is learning to crochet my own loose hairs in! It made a world of difference! I also sleep with my hair wrapped up in a silky-type scarf which helps with the frizzies not coming back out! Love to all

I use the same one (from dreadhead).. it took a while to get the hang of it, but now I seriously CANNOT live without it!!!

You push the end through the dread, get the loose hairs in your fingertips (of the opposite hand), then (make sure the tool is open on the end) wrap the loose hairs around the end (the hook part) of the tool, push the little thing closed (so the hairs will stay inside), and pull it back through the dread.. now just repeat all the way down the dread (in effect 'sewing' the loose hair all the way down the dread).

I hope you understand this explanation, if not, I can blabber on a bit more ;)

Best of luck, I hope you get to use and love it as much as I do!!

I use aloe gel to tame my little frizzies. This summer I had an aloe plant in my garden and I found a 100% aloe gel at the store the other day. It works really good and doesn't leave a residue. I use it every morning so I don't have bedhead :)

I've actually heard that pulling your dread through the base is bad for it, and it should only be done if you have a big loop there. Something about weakening the roots and breaking dreads...

I would suggest crocheting for loose hairs, and aloe or something like a taming dread gel (Knotty boy makes a nice one) to deal with the frizzies.

Yep, true, true.. Altho have you used aloe yourself before? I use dreadheadhq products (just like knotty boy), but never aloe.. This is the first time I'm hearing of it.... So, no bad side effects from it (crumbling white pieces, crusty stuff, etc.)??

My dreads are also three months old now, and I use dreadhead's products, and totally DWELL on their advice.. Here's the link to the page that shows a little animation of how to tighten roots ((your head will feel GREAT.. UPLIFTED after you spend some time doing some 'clock wise rubbing')).. You may even feel a little tingley energy after, like your chakras have been balanced or something! ;)

Their site has a lot of good advice on 'maintaining dreads'.. with nice lil' diagrams and animations..

sleeping with a hat or scarf on works wonders.
I don't put anything in my hair like wax or aloe, I just try to palmroll them as much as possible.
I make a little dready ball mess outta the strays and wrap and twist crochet into my dreads or around them, if they are being difficult you can put a bead on the dread to hold in place and assist it to hold on and attach.
and totally try the dreadhead massage, grabbing dreads at the roots and rub them into your scalp or just palm your head and give it a good rub. aaahhhh, so nice.
oh, and swimming in saltwater has really helped to speed up my hair locking. highly recommended, if accessible.

i haven't tried to crochet my loose hairs yet but for some of my especially messy dreads i have wrapped with string starting at the root. of course you can't do this for every dread but it really helps gather the loose hair and helps the roots grow in dready -- plus string looks beautiful in dreadlocks!
