I know that it's normal to have a dry scalp and I've only had dreads for about 10 months now and I was wondering if the scalp issues ever go away or if is it that kind of thing that you just learn to deal with? I use a special moisterizer for braids and dreads but any suggestions would be great! Thanks!

Re: Do the scalp problems ever end?!?!
Mon, March 24, 2008 - 7:59 PMWhenever you wash your hair, I would do the following:
1) Scrape your scalp before even getting your hair wet. This is to remove any dandruff or flakes, making it easier for them to be removed when you shampoo. I used to use a bareet comb, and would lift ach dread up in a 90 degree angle to my head and scrape under it.
2) During the wash, give your scalp a really good rubbing with your palm, as if you were matting the roots against the scalp, this will also help loosen.
3) Assess the effect the shampoo you are using is having in your scalp issues.... had my dreads for about a year and a half (without any sign of dandruff), then I tried Knotty Boy Shampoo bar, which gave me terrible itchies and dandruff...and was a problem I continued to have....I worked-out that Knotty Boy used some sort of ingredient that my scalp did not like, and I switched to Dreadhead HQ, which my scalp LOVES (and also really seems to help my itchies)...Different people react to different things...while I can't use Knotty Boy, many people rave about it; and while I adore Dreadhead HQ, others can't use it....
4) When you rinse, ensure it's thoroughly washed-out....residue will also cause problems for your scalp.
5) When you have rinsed, give it a minute or so of rinsing with ultra-cold water (I realise this may be uncomfortable in colder weather, but it really does help with dreaded-scalp conditions)...this stimulates blood flow to the scalp, and I found that by doing this, I would get less dandruff, and it would take longer to appear (rather than the two days after washing without the cold rinse)

Re: Do the scalp problems ever end?!?!
Wed, March 26, 2008 - 6:09 PMI sometimes wet a wash clothe with hot water and soap it up a little with Dr. Bonner's mint castile soap and wash (rub) my scalp with the cloth stretched over my index finger, carefully getting to the roots of each dread (and in between). I then do the same with just water and then some sort of essential oil (if your having dandruff problems maybe use rosemary essential oil).
I usually do this when I'm not wanting to wash my whole head of locs. It leaves your scalp tingly clean and smelling oh so yummy.
One love,

Re: Do the scalp problems ever end?!?!
Fri, April 4, 2008 - 6:39 PMHello! Sorry to sound negative-but mine never ended after 5 years and waist length hair to I had to cut them off and my scalp was so red underneath it was praciticaly bleeding! However, tea tree oil and apple cider vinegar rinse when i washed it ( about every 2 weeks...) helped. Sometimes hemp oil moisturizer felt good but then I think it encouraged lint to get stuck in them. Also, I just let my hair ( waist lenght and very thick) go with no 'pruning' so the locks were monsters and sort of intergrown- maybe that was why my scalp was so irritated. Good luck! -

Re: Do the scalp problems ever end?!?!
Sat, May 3, 2008 - 5:04 PMI use neutrogena severe dandriff or anything stronger if its available in the line. This works sooooo well! It doesnt smell to swell, so I use it, then I let the shampoo soak in my scalp for a few minutes (you really only need to use this on your scalp), then I use some really good smelling shampoo, from knotty boy or something good afterwards. My scalp isnt itchy or anything after it. I only need to use it once or twice a week. I highly recommend this. I have tried a bunch of products..
