Cause Kit insppired me to share, and I love you all so much.
Here are some links to the memories of the Get Up Dread Up livejournal community.

On felting dreads themselves:

The one major warning is never, NEVER, felt the roots. you will break them and then have lots of fuzzies, and you'll be sad. And of course, beware of over felting. You can damage your hair if you felt one spot too much, which can make your dreads weak.
My lovely husband puts in time with the felting needle on my head, and it yields amazingly glorious results. The one downdise is the immediate shrinkage from the hair tightening up, but my dreads have been maturing beautifully due to this tool.

Will it damage them if there to young?
I think this is really an awesome idea but i don't want to mess up my babies. -

Re: Some needle felting links
Wed, February 13, 2008 - 12:48 PMI've had my dreads for...<counts>...about 5 months now. I started felting about a month ago, tightening up the hairs that wanna stay loose at the ends and rounding my tips. I haven't had any problems at all. Actually, after rounding my tips it's helped to keep the dread in tact. (Especially the ones right in front of my ears! My glasses were always pulling those out.) I think I would wait until your dread starts accumulating some natural tightness before you start this. (If you had them put in all in one session, I'm probably wait at leats 3 months.)
I think the best thing to do would be try one or two that are somewhat hidden beneath your other dreada and see how it works for you. -

Fri, February 22, 2008 - 9:00 AMokee dokee
could someone clue me in on the bestest way (or any way, really) of blunting/rounding the tips with felting needles? Folding over? wrapping around? Pushing in from below?
Maybe it's because my hair is exceptionally fine, but I'm having trouble getting anything to work out.
Thanks muches! -

Re: Some needle felting links
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 9:44 AMwell, i have really fine hair too, somewhat wavy/straight, so I folded my hair over and twisted the bottom of the dread (the blunted end) and stuck it in front of my felting block and went to town stabbing the thing (not too much, as Laa said it does damage, a lot of little hairs fell out, so just be careful!)
sometimes I had these little "ends" from my dreads sticking out of where I folded up, so i would twirl them into the felting needle and stick them in, or if they were too much or too thick, id trim them a bit. Other then that, I still have a lot of loose hairs, but my ends are a lot nicer and cleaner, and my dreads look 9 months instead of 6/7. I'm loving my newly nubbed nubbies =) I hope this helps you out, much luck!

Re: Some needle felting links
Thu, February 21, 2008 - 6:13 AMYay! I hear you on the blunted tips. My husband has been working his way though my 50-something dreads blunting and tightneing them. I've had about 3 inches of shrinkage, but they look like dreads now! World of difference!
Also, I think you should name the orange abd blue one in the back left Miguel. It looks liek a Miguel. -

Re: Some needle felting links
Thu, February 21, 2008 - 6:49 AMhehe, heck yes Miguel it is =D I had about the same amount of shrinkage, it's crazy how different they look now! I was so down before because at 6-7 months they should have looked better, but once I sat down with my felting needle and went to town I discovered that my hair really wants to be dreadies! They look sooo much better, felting needle is my HEEEROOOOO <3
Laa, I know it's early in the year yet, but are you/do you go to festies in the summer??? I'd love to chillski with some rad dreadies on here this summer when it's amazing outside!!
Much love to you all <3
-Kit (who now feels like she can conquer the world with the power of her dreads!!!) -

Re: Some needle felting links
Thu, February 21, 2008 - 10:57 AMUhhhh, I'm doing WildFire and Forestdance Mass this year.
I wish I had time to fest it up in the summer (dying to go to Starwood and Burning Man eventually) but I'm full time at my studio so finding the time gets tricky.
Maybe we can arrange a New Endlandish outing of tribe dreddies and hit up some lower Maine or NH beaches or something? -

Re: Some needle felting links
Thu, February 21, 2008 - 12:19 PMAww...well yeah I don't think I'm hitting up burning man this year, I really wanted to because I'm graduating college this year and it would have been perfect, but alas, I have no funds to go...but I am however hitting up Vibes this year and thats why I was wondering what your plans were, it's so close to us, and a beautiful location, I went last year and I'm pumped its going to be in the same place this year...
but yeah, we should plan a New England outing sometime when it gets warm! I can't wait!

Thu, February 21, 2008 - 12:39 PMif you get a change to go to burning man, i highly suggest you go! the alkaline dust works wonders on dreads. when i came back they were like a new set of locks!

Re: Some needle felting links
Wed, March 12, 2008 - 1:58 PMwhat size felting needle should i use and how exactly should i go bout putting the blunted tips on with the needle? -
-
Re: Some needle felting links
Wed, March 12, 2008 - 3:11 PMI believe I got a 20-something gage, and when I rounded off my tips, I took an inch at the ends, folded it upwards and twisted the dread, then stabbed at it until it was nice and blunt at the ends - a felting block will help if you have one. It's really neat! Just be careful of over felting as Laa said above - and you might have a lot of tiny hairs that come when you do it, just be suuuper careful!!
Best of luck! -
-
Re: Some needle felting links
Wed, March 12, 2008 - 7:34 PMThat is exactly what i did.
I tightened the tips nicely until there's about 2cm of messy undreaded hair left and then fold them up and just stab and pull in random controlled positions until it's all nice, round and hard.
I use a #12 (which is also 0.6mm) crochet hook. For larger, thicker dreads, a #10 will be better.
Just becareful not to stab your thumb!!! -
