Been thinking of starting locks, but I don't know how I want my hair sectioned.
I've heard of 4 sectioning schemes so far:
1) The grid
2) Bricklaying
3) Catch-as-catch-can (just grab some hair)
4) Let the hair decide (i.e., the natural method)
Are there other methods? Which do you prefer, and why?

Re: How Do You Section?
Mon, May 25, 2009 - 8:57 AMThe Grid is easy to do, but there's always the likelihood that you'll be left with parts/gaps over your head, as the dreads will be in the same lines down your scalp.
Bricklaying is the best method in my opinion, as it covers all those parts and gaps, and you get a nice, even coverage all over. Youcan also vary thicknesses, so they're not all uniform size...
Catch-as-catch-can: I've tried this before, but found I didn't like the way my dreads 'sat' on my head, they looked kinda messy for my liking.
Let the Hair decide: This takes a lot more work in the long-run, as your hair isn't properly sectioned-off and can quite easily pull-in hairs that would otherwise belong to other dreads...and those hairs can pull and hurt your scalp.
But overall, it's different strokes for different folks...people have their own preferred methods of dreadlocking...I like mine neat and tidy, so I always choose bricklaying (sometimes even in sectioned diamond-pattern), but I know of people who swear by the au naturale method, just letting their hair go all knatty on it's own....I guess it depends on what you're looking for, and what you want...and how much time you're willing to spend on them, or even wait for them to be 'developed'. -

Re: How Do You Section?
Sat, May 30, 2009 - 2:28 AMThat's close to what I was thinking. I tend to like things tidy, though the idea of a random, organic pattern has appeal as well. However, it seems the patience route isn't for me. My hair is a bit long, and I don't want to cut it. As an experiment, I cleaned my hair with residue-free shampoo and went a day without product. (Note to self: Don't do that again!) It certainly tangled, but not in a way I like.
I'm leaning toward bricklaying, except I'm not big on square sections. I wonder if hexagons would give a more organic look. -

Re: How Do You Section?
Tue, June 2, 2009 - 7:38 PMHere are a couple more questions:
1) What size do you like your sections to be? (1 inch, 2 inches, etc.)
2) Do you like all the sections to be the same size, or different sizes? If different, is there a system to it? (Alternating rows of thick and thin, thick on top and thin on the sides, etc.) -

Re: How Do You Section?
Thu, June 4, 2009 - 3:20 AM(1) I like my dreads on the thinner side, so my sections are less than an inch. General rule, when your dreads are properly mature, your dreads will be about 3/4 the thickness of your sections.
(2) I like different sizes, when doing the brick method, it's easy, you just do them different sized sections rather than all the same...the grid doesn't have to be perfect or all over even, it's just a general pattern to follow to make sure you get evenly-placed dreads. Just, as you're sectioning-off your scalp, make some bigger or smaller...easy! :) -

Re: How Do You Section?
Tue, June 9, 2009 - 6:26 PMi tried to brickwork section my hair when i started my dreads but my hair refused to backcomb - it just would not work, so we ended up grabbing chunks and my hair pretty much chose its sections itself (really hard to explain). I wouldn't recommend grabbing chinks from my experience as now, a few months on, i have some hair that should be in one dread - in another instead and it gets really annoying and they seem to be joining at the roots making maintenance all the more fun. -

Re: How Do You Section?
Wed, June 10, 2009 - 6:59 AMyeah that's the 3rd option mentioned, I tried it once, and combed them out like 3 weeks later and did them again, sectioning them off properly...it's just too easy to get that problem you've been having, roots being ill-defined and being in the 'wrong' dreads...ouchies :(
