Are loose hairs really bad?

Hi people!

Ok, so I know we have all covered the loose hair problem in previous threads, and how to fix the problem. And fixing the problem sounds really easy if you have:

a) long hair
b) a good friend to help you and
c) eyes that you can rip out and sit somewhere to give a great view of what you are trying to do if you dont have b.

So I kinda dont have any of those - i mean i have friends but not patient ones that are willing to sew my loose hairs in. And the loose hairs bother me a bit but I try to think about it this way.

All the people that just went with the complete "neglect method". Now surely, none of you guys out there that got your dreadies with the neglect method would have sat there sewing in your loose hairs. So, obviously you would have had loose hairs eh? Did they end up dreading by themselves?

My dreads are only 3 months old. And I did start with the backcombing method. And I guess my question really is - "Should I be worried about loose hairs or will they eventually fix themselves when they are ready?" I haven't got big chunks of loose hairs - but there are a few and I just dont know anymore.

Please help me and either throw my stress levels through the roof by telling me that loose hairs are pure evil or put my worrying to rest by just telling me that everything will be okay.

Thanks in advance. Sorry for the rambling - hope it makes sense.

Wether or not they will fix themselves depends on your hair type and texture. Obviously, the more curly your hair, the more likely the loose ones will work themselves into the dread on their own. You will always get loose hair no matter what because your hair (especially when dreaded) will break or get pulled out at the roots, then the new growth will start over as short hair. That short hair has to reach a certain length before it has a chance to knot into the roots and until it reaches that length, it will appear as loose on top pf your head (unless you help it along a bit)

Kath, I do all my sewing-in of loose hairs by myself, and although I have long dreads, the sections which actually require this work are always up around the top third of my hair, up near the roots, so it can be done yourself...you just need a lotta patience, a big mirror and some good upper-arm muscles (man it hurts after a while - but I tend to do maybe ten at a time, and space it out over a week or so)...also, I find that sense of ouch does wonders...the back dreads that I can't see with a mirror, I do just by touch, and yeah, works well! I, too, don;t have anybody to help me with mine...I'm everyone's dread doctor, but got nobody capable of doing mine :((( awww

I seriously don't know how you do it Beksta. I've tried and tried and I just cant get the hang of it. You are my role model :p I don't think my loose hair problem is too bad - I've definately seen worse. And patience - I have tonnes of that but i guess when i have 3 kids running around it is hard to concentrate on threading hair through a needle.

But I must say, I'm being good. staying away from wax even though I really really want to grab it and smear it all over my dreads. Took the dogs to the beach last weekend to try to get some sea water into my dreads. that was good. Now we have the huge oil spill so there goes that little maintenance plan too.

Am i cursed???? I am cursed.

oh wow you're near the oil spill? :O dangit! :((

Yeah you'll find once you do get the chance to sit down and do them, make sure you do them properly, and you won;t have much maintenance to do after that...you may have a few here and there to do at root-level, but once most of the loose hairs are sewn-in, the rest of the dread will generally behave...but yeah, I too have difficulty finding time to do my dreads lol or I just get lazy :P hehehh
