Hello my fellow dreadheads.

This may have been asked before and if so I apologise, but recently I've started noticing that at the base of a couple of my dreads near my face (I can't see the roots of the rest of my dreads easily so I'm not sure if they're all over my head or just near my face) what appears to be dandruff.

However, upon closer inspection (and pulling some of it out) it turns out that the white stuff I can see is actually dried hair follicles that have come out as the individaul hairs have fallen out, but obviously stayed in place because the hair is knotted into my dreads. We lose hair everyday so its nothing shocking, but Im just wondering if anyone has any experience with this and if there is anything I can do about it, because it really does look like dandruff and Im not really enamoured by its appearance haha.

My dreadbabies are about a week shy of their 1st birthday if that helps at all.

:)

I wash my hair about once a week, and yeah, I use my fingertips to rub on my scalp in a circular motion.
At the moment I use the dreadhead liquid shampoo and have previously used the knotty boy liquid shampoo.
Also, every 3 or so weeks, I give my scalp a good clean with apple cider vinegar.
I don't have a problem with dandruff or anything, its just the dried hair follicles that are bugging me :)

Yeah, I don't have much itching these days, when I first started out some days I was driven crazy by the itch.
My problem is now, that at the top 2 or so inches of my 'problem' dreads (not all of them that I can see have this issue) when I look closely at them I can see the ends of the hair that has fallen out naturally and at the end of each hair there is a white tip.
I guess nothing can be done about them other then getting a pair of fine tip scissors and snipping the little white bits off.
Problem is that would take forever as there are Heaps of them per dread. Haha.

Cheers for sharing your knowledge with me anyways. I'll just have to keep searching for a solution

Haha cheers. It's good to know I'm not the only one. And I guess there isn't really going to be a solution.
Ah wells, it's not obvious from a distance and there aren't that many people that come close enough to see it already.

Haha cheers dude. Well that is an option I guess. I wasn't really planning on dyeing them, but if it becomes a major problem then yeah I'll definately consider it. At this moment I'll just let them be.
Naww that sucks but its good you've got a solution for it :D

I have dyed my dreads and I don't think the follicles really pick up the dye like the hair shaft does, unfortunately...

Though, if she were to lighten her hair, it would probably make them a lot less noticeable!

If you just wait for them to grow-out they won;t be noticeable - I had a bitta an issue like this, and once my locks grow-out the sun tends to naturally bleach em a bit (like my roots and tips are remarkably different colours lol), and once they lighten, you dun notice em at all :)

Yeah I think I'll just wait for them to grow out. My tips are already sorta lighter.
Cheers for all the advice :D

I suppose this discussion is already finished, but I just have one more lil' thing to say! :D I noticed this same problem sometime before my first year, and finally cut the teeny little white pieces off - one careful tiny little piece at a time. They just bugged me too much to leave 'em alone (they just looked to much like dandruff, although I knew it was not)!!! I don't know if I've become gentler over time with my root rubbing, but it just never happens anymore - thank goodness!

                              ~Wishing you your happy solution! :) ~

Have every little bit of input is always welcomed!!
Haha yeah, Im not sure if my follicle problem caused by root rubbing, cause I dont do that nearly enough, and thats really naughty of me :P

But I have been thinking about it, and think that I may have discovered one of the reasons why it is happening.
I have to tie my hair back for work, I usually take the 5 dreads close to my hairline on each side, so 10 all up, pull them back and tie them, then tie all the hair together.

I was thinking that maybe because I have them pulled back in such a way for hours at a time for days at a time may, the pressure on the roots might be what is causing the follicles to get pulled out slowly, cause some of the follice crap on my roots is up to like 5mm long.

The follice issue is only really happening just above my ears on either side of my head that I have noticed and that is where the hair is pulled tightest. Bummer of a thing is, I cant really do anything about having to tie my hair back, cause thats just one of the rules at work - long hair is to be tied back, Im lucky they didnt fire me when I got them hahaha.

Im experimenting with different ways to hold my hair back without having them pull so much.
