chamomile and calendula great for blonde hair
rosemary and yarrow is a great combo for dark hair.
strong teas to wash with, mixed with glycerine to wash
oils good conditioners.... cocnut oil with some essential oils too....rosemary, or tee tree ( help keep the bugs out!)
for wax....
i make salves
oil infused with herb...it is really easy....
say for blonde hair i would throw chamomile in a jar, fill to the top....top with oil and shake every day for a few weeks...
strain and add some bees wax ( along with the e.oils..) and voilia! dread wax that is good for your hair.
i keep joking i am going to market this as a "dread salve"...i have always thought that a silly idea......maybe not.....
but there are lots of way s to care for the locks w/out using commercial products
my favorite in the summer is to massage teetree into the roots.....rosemary oil is really good for that too as it balances out oils and gives shine and protects against dandruff and keeps bugs at bay while increasing circulation to the scalp too.

  • Hiya,

I've got pretty young dreads - just over a month. I've washed them twice so far in the shower with a bar of very cheap & basic soap. little scent, residue etc. Apart from some hairs getting a bit loose (which get unloose after a roll & crochet) i've not noticed anything wrong with this method so far... again i'm new to this so perhaps i'm going wrong so far, i was just wondering what the overall advantage of making home-made cleaning products (apart from great smelling dreads ;))

the herbs like rosemary and yarrow are balancing. for people with greasy or oily tendancies and even over dry hair.....these herbs are gold.
things like chamomile for the blondes it brings out the blonde highlights, so many folks are interested in this
things like ti tree, eucylptus, rosemary too ....even lavender is a good one to protect against bugs. so i like the fact that by going herbal you are covering so many of the problems that may arise- very useful and one in all-
