hey, on my first set of dreads, i made them with backcomb and wax. in the begginning they were really fat and nice. but as they got older. instead of shrinking in length. they shrunk in diameter and stayed generally the same length. i was left with ugly gaps, and you could see my scalp quite well. my dreads became skinny and flat. Another problem was my dreads in the back would never fall down natrually like a dread. they were really curly and just didnt seem to make any sense (there is a pic of them in my profile) i picked apart my month and a half old dreads and lost alot of hair. ive got my hair cut and when it grows back out, im gonna put some new dreadies back in. i plan to back comb, and then instead of wax, use a crochet hook to tame all the fly aways. does anybody have any tips for keeping my dreads thick and round, and any suggestions on how to sleep with my dreads? thanks for the help!

well.... a month and a half isnt near enough time for them to 'tame'
mine went through several different stages and didnt start to behave properly for the first 6-8 months...
if you want perfect hair, dont dread it... the first year, your hair will undergo some weird twists and turns... you just have to have patience

to keep em round, you have to palm roll the buggers on a regular basis, and for the backs, get a friend to help you out

your dreads will shrink in diameter when they're locking up. make your dread sections bigger than you want your dreads because they will shrink down when they're tightening...

and like the dude above me said, it will take a lot of time. it doesn't happen overnight or over a month or two. its gonna take a long time, but its worth it in the end. just go with the process and let it do its thing.

as far as what to do when you're sleeping, i like to wrap my hair in something like an old t-shirt or they make dread wraps you can use. it works better for me than just leaving it down so that stray hairs don't end up locked to a dread on the other side of my head, if that makes sense.

hope it all works out for you brother!
