hi y'all!

i've always wanted dreads for sooo long and i just got my dreads 10 days ago- i did plenty of research beforehand or so i thought. when i got to the salon, they backcombed everything then braided it and backcombed the ending. at that moment, i was puzzled at the process but thought the lady knew her way with dreads. i wonder if they can be salvaged? just leave 'em or redo? any suggestions? i've posted my dreads in my gallery.

thanks! namaste

wow that is seriously weird. The problem you're gonna have, is the visual difference between backcombed dreads and the braids...personally, I'd re-do them, but that's really up to you, how you feel about them...*seriously wonders wth is wrong with these damned salons*

      Yeah - Interesting look, but...

When I did my hair, I had one braid on the side. It lasted a long while, but then as the hair started to knot (the braid hampers the dreading process), the braided stands got WAY out of control. Ultimately, I unbraided the hair, used Beksta's "rip & twist" method, and everything turned out fine.

    hi beksta and david-

thank you for replying- i think i'll take them out because what you guys have said about them- it makes sense, they won't be able to form dreads properly and they won't be consistent as well. i'll let y'all know of the progress- i'm currently in summer school so i'll wait until i'm done with that before i take 'em out.

    thanks again! :-)

No probs...for days after replying to your post, I was still scratching my head over it all (and not cos I need to wash lmao)...can I ask...the salon you went to, did it specialise in dreads? or was it just a regular salon that said "oh yeah we can do them"...? Braiding is great for straight hair, you take them out just prior to actually backcombing...gives some kinks for strands to lock onto...but it just mystifies me why anybody would leave them in???

i had the same problem!!! what i did is had them redone. you will regret keeping the braids because of the visual difference and it won't feel like a dread, just a messy and frissy braid. trust me hun. you will feel much better if you have a full dread.

Wow dude, that really sucks! If I were you, I would try to get my money back. She obviously didn't know what she was doing.

Also, I would think about having a good friend or someone you love doing them. They'd be a lot more sentimental that way. Plus you can keep checking on the process yourself and make sure they're doing it right and not feel bad about giving them suggestions since they're not a "professional" that should know what they're doing. Just a thought.

i dunno if the hairdresser was totally off. the first time i had my hair sectioned and backcombed, my friend from the virgin islands did them. she backcombed, and then twisted them - 3 sections like in a baird, but spiraled each section around the other and then backcombed the ends. i know that for some hair textures this works (i.e. super natty, african hair - not italian caucasian hair) so i took them out too and had them resectioned and backcombed.
it's def important to understand your hair texture and what the best way to dread it is. looking at your pix, i'd also say take them out and backcomb the whole lock. braids will eventually be more of a headache.

i'd prolly second ziggy on this one and have a friend help you out. plus, added bonus! you get all the sweet memories and energy from someone who already digs ya soaked up into your new dread babies!

take em out and start over.. I like a little rubber band on the tip and another at the root base as close to the scalp as possible... the rubber bands are kinda ugly but they help hold the locks together in the beggining and keep em from tangling

rubberbands are debatable - and if you are one of those people who dont like the rubberbands, try putting a bead in at the top instead of the rubberband. The bead wont constrict the dread in any way.

Again, rubber banding the roots will cause hairs to break and result in a halo of frizz that will be un-tameable until they grow out long enough to sew-on or whatever :S

Beksta was right the rubberbands did cause some breakge so I took em all out..... ok Bektsa lets hear the "I told you so" haha. Its alot more work w/o them though I have to resection each dread and palm roll after I sleep or shower.. so much like work ... they are however pretty locked up after only two weeks the tips and roots are still loose but the 3-5 inches in between are all knots!
