So my guy has dreads (and afro-american hair) and I've been helping him with maintenance, but I think I need better instructions. He has them done in a salon, and I twist (palm roll?) in ONE direction only, per his directions from the salon... but seeing instructions and video online, they show rolling in both directions. Please help!
Also, a friend of mine (with straight, caucaisan hair) wants dreads and I'll be helping her start them tomorrow. She ordered a kit from knotty boy, but i hear mixed messages about wax. Should I use it or not? (if it arrives in time!) I've been reading up what I can but I don't have a ton of time to research what's best, and I tend to question whether the sites selling stuff push the methods using their products just because it's a business...
So, I'm so sorry if I repeat old questions, but I have to get back to actually working while I'm at work, and short on time before I see her tomorrow. Please give me advice or links to reputable places if you can!!
thanks a ton!

Re: dreads everywhere! (questions both new & maintenance)
Fri, January 9, 2009 - 11:29 AMAfrican American hair knots up differently than Caucasian hair. From what I've read, all you need to do is twist in one direction, and it should knot up quite nicely. I would roll as the salon recommends, and change methods only if you have a problem.
Personally, I would avoid the wax. Most people regret it. If you do use it, just use a tiny bit (and I mean tiiiiny, maybe 1/4 of what they recommend) and use it to calm down some of the fly aways and frizzies. You don't need it though. Knotty Boy is a business and they want you to use their wax. Nothing against them, but the wax is completely unnecessary for good dreads. -

Re: dreads everywhere! (questions both new & maintenance)
Fri, January 9, 2009 - 11:45 AMThanks! I expected it to be quite different between the two kinds of hair ;o) I think I just need to twist my BF's more regularly....
Will try to not use any wax, or use very little amounts... i'll explain what i've read about it but leave it up to the girl who owns the head :P

Re: dreads everywhere! (questions both new & maintenance)
Sat, January 10, 2009 - 4:20 PMI would not use wax... I have caucasian hair and while I did get a dreadperm to get some texture, I have found that you can form nice dreads with just backcombing and a small crochet hook. This video shows the technique: www.youtube.com/watch with the crochet hook
These videos show how it will look: www.youtube.com/watch & www.youtube.com/watch but the one above explains the technique better.
I had the perm about a month ago and then took three days to crochet all the dreadies myself this week.
I did buy a dreadkit some years ago to start dreads (they lasted about 3 months before I cut my hair), but IMO those products are overpriced and not really necessary to be able to form dreads. -

Re: dreads everywhere! (questions both new & maintenance)
Sun, January 11, 2009 - 9:04 AMI used the Knotty Boy wax for about a month after getting the newbies started. It helped hold them together but I didn't care for the smell or texture.
I have very thick curly hair that wanted to dread on it's own so I probably could of gotten away with no wax at all but I had already purchased it.

Re: dreads everywhere! (questions both new & maintenance)
Wed, January 21, 2009 - 5:35 AMJC, it would probably be easier to google Hair Police than type up a full explanation, but a dread perm is basically dreadlocks that have been chemically set.

Re: dreads everywhere! (questions both new & maintenance)
Sun, January 11, 2009 - 3:17 PMJust to add one more wax-related experience, I used a pretty decent amount of wax for the first 6 months or so that I had dreads... I never had any negative problems with it and I have no regrets about it. I stopped using it once my dreads matured though.. I've had them for almost a year and a half now. But, totally up to the person who's head the dreads will be on =) -

Re: dreads everywhere! (questions both new & maintenance)
Sun, January 11, 2009 - 4:07 PMi too used a good amount of wax for the first year though and haven't had any problems.i used probably two jars or so!i have had my dreads for almost 5 years now.i wouldn't do the dread perm though cuz i dont like the chemical process of "dreading",to each his own.idk,i feel thats too commercial for me...just let it happen.i have two cousins that have had their dreads for over ten years each, one has african hair, him being half black and white, and the other bone straight hair,we're filipinos, and they both started with wax.you just have to stop after 6-12months or so and let them do their thing.

Re: dreads everywhere! (questions both new & maintenance)
Mon, January 12, 2009 - 8:56 AMthanks all!
i did my friend's hair, i think it came out well (at least, it looks good at the moment! :D)
the wax didn't arrive. she has very fine, slightly wavy hair. I backcombed and palmrolled, with a few seperate/twists things sometimes - the LJ community get up dread up was helpful in learning a lot. So I didn't use ANY product, recommended if they aren't holding up she could possibly use a TINY bit of wax just for the beginning, but not to use much or regularly. we'll see!! i'll be posting pics when I have time to download them from the camera.
and yeah, despite the videos of palmrolling both ways, on her and on my guy i still find only going one direction is best. -
