Dread update ... with more pictures!

A dread update!!! I’ve had my dreads almost two and a half months now. They were originally backcombed, and then I started using a crochet hook to tighten them up. I also use my crochet hooks to take in loops and frizz, and even out bumps (all of which I’m getting less and less of). I wash them once to twice a week with Dr Bronner’s and do an apple cider vinegar treatment. Beyond washing, I use no products in my dreads. My dreads have shrunk so much. Most of them are very tight, pretty straight, and have minimal frizz. Turns out they’re not weirdly shaped like I thought they’d be! (Thank you crochet hooks!) I’ve never been happier with my hair! I mean, come on, I can play with my hair and it doesn’t tangle (tangles are just unavoidable with curly hair, lol).

I recently joined three sets of two dreads on the very back/bottom of my head. They were very tiny and the least locked up so they joined well. Now I have 49 dreads! When I started out, I thought 49 would be the ultimate number to have since it’s a multiple of 7 and 7 is my favourite number. Now I’m stupidly happy about it. :D

I’ve been wondering... How exactly do you know when your dreads are mature? And, how long do they take to grow? I’ve lost at least half before-dreading my length. Do dreads take twice as long as normal hair to grow because of the locking? Or even more?

Check out my profile for recent pictures that I just posted and tell me what you think. Why does that sound like I’m somehow whoring myself? Lol...

You may not see fuzz now, but the more you crochet your dreads, the more damaging it is. It breaks many hairs every time you poke that needle through. So I would definitely moderate it to a minimum. If you do it every day or more than once a week, I would say too much. Plus as your hair continues to grow and dread up naturally at the root, you will see a big difference in your naturally locked hair and the crocheted part. So you have to constantly crochet the new growth if you want it to look the same. And like I said the more this is done the more it damages your beautiful locks.

But your dreads look awesome. Just be patient and your only 2 and half months in even though they don't look like it. Wait until your at 6 months. By then you should see at least an inch of new dreaded growth and will take on a whole character of their own.

I realize it can break hairs so I'm careful. You can hear when it's breaking them... I've been crocheting less and less anyway. I'm not really concerned what the new growth will look like. I will not be crocheting the roots... I tried that before... It rips hairs out the scalp which so bad not to mention painful, lol.I find a bigger crochet hook is less damaging. It takes in more hairs at once so they're less likely to break. Like a size 1.00. I'm really only taking in frizz with them now, which is not ripping hairs. Anyway, thanks for the advice/concern. I plan to have my dreads many years so I don't really care when they're gonna grow, I'm just wondering.

I use the crochet hook on my hair and I don't face any issues. May I ask how do you use it until it breaks you hair? What size do you use?

I think you can rip your hair if you're pulling it too hard or just not careful. It might depend on the type of hair you have, too.I mostly use a size 1.00 ... I find I'm more likely to break the hair with a smaller sizes (I guess it takes in a smaller amount of hair which is easier to break). I use a 0.75 on the tighter areas, though. I'll probably get a 0.66 if I need it for really tight areas. The smaller crochet hooks also brutalize your fingers if you're not careful, lol... I stabbed one of my fingers about five times in the same place (deeply, too, it was gross) while using a 0.75 because I wasn't used to it.

By the way, your dreads look GREAT, Ken. Nice new pictures.

Oh I was actually asking Justin on why he insists that using a crocheting hook on dreads is such a bad idea.

I use a 0.6mm to do my regular maintenance, pulling in loose hairs etc. I use the larger ones eg: 0.75mm and 0.85mm when I'm making dreads. More coverage and pulls in more hairs.

Crochet in excess, from what I have heard, can weaken dreads by snapping hairs inside the dread, making them less secure. (Just because you don't feel or hear hair snapping, doesn't mean it isn't.) I would assume this is akin to felting in excess...I think this may have been the main concern. A lot of people learn to do maintenance on their hair in a trial and error fashion, and crochet can be very damaging if you do it wrong.

One thing that is very true though is that of you switch your maintenance method from crochet to something else, you WILL have a visible line in your dread where the maintenance technique changed, so that's just something to be aware of.

And heck, your dreads look awesome. Very well matured compared to your 2 day old shots! So straight and all. Mine has some weird waves on some dreads.

I actually figured you might be asking Justin, but I gave my input anyway, lol.

Thanks on the compliment. :) I actually like wavy dreads for some reason. I'm too much of a perfectionist to have them on my head, but I think they're beautiful. (I don't mean crazily misshapen ones, but I find some kinks and bumps and stuff is really nice.)
