Here's a question for any old-time locked up folks.. or anyone else who may know the answer to this question!! :D
I am just wondering if EVER roots really get 'trained' to let new little baby hairs lock up automatically... Will root rubbing go on for the rest of my life, or do I get to stop at some point? I don't mind doing it really, but just get a bit tired of having to occasionally weave back in some new growth that hasn't found it's way into a dread.. and has actually managed to grow into a little tiny 'strand' of hairs grown to about 4 inches or so (as someone else mentioned in another question).
Do they EVER get 'trained'????
I don't mean to sound 'complain-ey' (yeah, new word), I truly love my dreads, they are the most maintenance free hairstyle I've probably ever had, and look like one of the best.. most importantly FEEL the BEST on top of my rooted head.. but I still do want to know the answer to this question!!! ;)
Thanks to any and all, I look forward to reading your answers...

Re: Loose hairs.. TIME.. Roots trained??
Sat, June 7, 2008 - 5:57 PMYou will always have to maintain your dreads. I know it sounds like a really lame thing, but if you stay on top of it you should never have too much to do. But if you are like me and don't care too much, you could let the hair grow out for a few months and sew it in. Either way works pretty well. -

Re: Loose hairs.. TIME.. Roots trained??
Tue, June 10, 2008 - 11:04 PMYeah, Tucker's probably right, but after a while they should be little to no work.
I don't mean to sound all condescending or anything, but I read somewhere that root rubbing can lead to breakage and entire dreads can fall off, which would make me want to roll up in a little ball and die.
That's if you have really dry hair. It's conditioned through wax and washing it.
Thanks for answering my question :)

Re: Loose hairs.. TIME.. Roots trained??
Sat, June 28, 2008 - 6:06 PMMy dreads are 11 months old now. They are sucking in a lot of the loose hair around the roots. I don't do any maintenance really besides washing and ripping a few apart. Most of the new growth works itself into the nearest dread now though. There is still some loose ones in there though.
Basically what I'm saying is that if you want neat looking dreads, maintenance if probably the key. I like messy dreads that so I let mine go and love them for it. I don't think you can 'train' them really. They'll do what they want. -

Re: Loose hairs.. TIME.. Roots trained??
Sun, June 29, 2008 - 5:37 AMI think a lot of it depends on your hair type (what it needs to dread teh best), and how well you are accomodating its wishes lol ;-)
For instance, I tried so many products and techniques in the first couple years of dreadlock-dom, but nothing really made me go 'wow'...until Dreadhead HQ shampoo (yes it's yet another dreadhead sponsored advertisement by Beksta lol)...but yeah with this stuff, I didn't have to root-rub at all really - I did a bit of it whilst I was lathering it up in the shower, but never had to outside the shower...Just give my dreads an occasional palm-roll and seperate, but yeah...after about 4 or 5 washes with teh stuff, and I kid you not, I had my roots dreaded right up almost next to my scalp (whereas prior to this, I usually had about 3 inches of un-dreaded root)...I think it's a matter of finding whatever it is that works best for your hair, what will really complement your hair type and encourage that matting...
Good luck :-) -

Re: Loose hairs.. TIME.. Roots trained??
Sun, June 29, 2008 - 10:17 AMYeah Beksta, I'm also a fellow Dreadhead HQ shampoo lover.. I also feel like I'm constantly advertising for their (and knotty boy's) products on here.. they work so great I just can't help it!!
I guess my hair also responds well to the stuff 'coz I'm locked right up to the roots like you were..
I'm just so interested to know what changes to expect now that I've reached my first milestone.. (2 days away from) ONE blessed YEAR of dreadies!! :)
Wouldn't it be nice if someone came on here and said "Oh, once you reach 12 months you will have NO MORE maintenance, and your hair will be absolutely perfect forever more.." Ha.
Perhaps this is as close to perfection as it comes (it feels pretty alright, anyway).. :) -

Re: Loose hairs.. TIME.. Roots trained??
Mon, June 30, 2008 - 6:15 AMWhat changes to expect I think are really kinda dependant on each person's own hair...everyone's different - I know people whose dreads were still pretty loose after a year...and I know people whose dreads locked up beautifully within a couple of months...I think it depends on person to person...I think t's actually kinda exciting really - think of it like a series of surprises...watching them develop and mature and do their thing...
Unfortunately there's no rules to the process...but yeah, these loose hairs and stuff you talk of...how about some pics? Let me have a look at your babies! :-D I've come across so many people who reckon their dreads are really messy etc...but the thing is, they get to see them up close (others don;t), so they see all these tiny little loose hairs and assume everyone else does too...when in fact, to others, their dreads look amazing...give us a look? :-) -

Re: Loose hairs.. TIME.. Roots trained??
Thu, July 3, 2008 - 5:43 AMI am almost at 2 years and STILL have undreaded hairs. I don't care though, it adds character. Just relax and let your hair come into it's own. Oh and maintenance isn't a necessity, it's a personal choice. good luck.
