I'm about 2 months in on my dreadlocks....and to be honest i'm a little nervous about how they look, their thin-ness, and keeping up with maintenance. I've been looking at some other pictures of dreadlocks and it looks like mine are a little thin. (i don't have as much hair as others). Maybe if i made the locks a little thicker? I used wax in the beginning....it seems like that was a big mistake. I've stopped using it this week. I also kept my bangs unlocked for added style. I want to keep going with it...I'm def passionate about keeping them....but I know this is usually a rough patch for everyone. Does anyone have any tips or tricks on my problem?

No way! I had a look at your fotos, and they're looking fine! :D Check out my pics...I have thin ones too.

What exact problems are you having with maintenance???

i'm getting a lot of pulls (big loops) from the dreads..i'm also in the process of trying to rinse out some of the wax that was used. I don't really mind the loose hairs so much. I know that is part of the process...but the loops coming out of the dreads are driving me batty.

OK for loops, you'll need a regular sewing needle and some cotton thread that matches as close as possible to your hair colour.

Thread needle and double it over, knot the end well. Insert needle into actual dreadlock (not the loop), but about where the loop is...make sure it's secure, so it won't fall out. Your thread and needle should now be orientated in a direction TOWARDS the loop, not away from it. Insert needle THROUGH the loop, bring it over the loop and back through again. Pull tight, and re-insert needle back into the actual dreadlock, poll tight. repeat this over and over until loops has either been pulled back into the dread, or has been sewn back in...they usually don't show, but if you wanna hide it after the "surgery" (lol) you can always cover with a bead or cotton binding :))

Hi guys ive had my locs for five weeks, ive noticed that the thicker locs are coming along fine couple of loops but im not too worried about those im more worried about the thinner locs which seem to be knotted sorta in the middle but at the roots and the tips are totally straight, Im thinking of untangling them and starting them again. Am i being paro or will they eventually lock up?Also ive taken my rubber bands out cos my hair was really thin where they were holding the root should i alternate them every couple of weeks?put the bands in one week and then leave them out for another? thanks for any info guys

I have thinner locks, and they DO take longer to knot-up than thicker locks, dun stress, they will lock! With regards to the loops, with only young dreads, this is natural, just keep palm-rolling to ensure they don't get more pronounced...and if they're still loops after a few months, let us know...I have a great method for sewing them back into the lock! :)) (also, don't put bands on your roots - this will only cause root breakage and you'll end with a halo of frizz around your head, hair that's broken and too short to do much with...)

I don't use salt water concoctions. I used to but found they dried-out my scalp wayyy to much and would cause flakes...it's really not necessary if ya just keep ya locks clean, they will dread-up no problem :) You should get into the HABIT of rolling...eventually it will be something that you do without even thinking - watching tv, whilst talking to people etc LOL try and do them every day (or close to)...this can be eased-up as they mature, but in early stages I think it's necessary to roll regularly.

Girl dont sweat it. I stressed a bit too when mine were babies...it look almost a year for my dreads to actually start lookin like nice dreads. If you have thin hair, it might take longer. Just know that all the work you put into them will show and will be worth it. And the problem with the loops, that will work itself out. My hair is supa curly and I had mad loops on every dread..they tightened up eventually though...you can (and I did this) put beads on em..where the loops are to keep em down.
Hang in there sis, this is all part of the process...

      same story for me.
my dreads started out super thin and not very dreadlike, but they matured over time.
my loops annoyed me at first, but they eventually just became funny shaped dreads. people sometimes point them out as their favourite.
but i've always been into the non-uniform looking dreads (each one being a different size, shape, and texture), so it depends on what you're going for.

dont fret, they'll be fine! i had the same issues when my babies were little. i have really really thin hair and i was constantly worrying that they wouldnt turn out 'right'. and the loops. ooooh, the loops! they drove me batty! i hated them. then, it was like one day i just woke up and loved them. i realized that the loops were part of their personality. and after time, some of them melt back into the dreads. my babies are 2 and a half years old now and i love them more and more ever day!

hey my dreads were the same at first they were growing out pretty thin at the root so i just joined two together and worked them with a crocher needle until they became one thicker dread and after that there so much easier to maintain :o)
