Just out of curiousity, what are people views on dread extensions? A viable way to be a part of the sub culture or lazy way of achieving something that should be a heartfelt journey? I tend to lean towards the latter.
Opinions?

Re: Extensions...
Mon, January 26, 2009 - 11:58 PMI reckon its the lazy way out personally. I would kill to have instant long dreads but I really want to live the experience. Right now I have short dreads, I cant wait til the day when my dreads are long and I look back at my photos of my short hair and think "wow". I like doing things the hardway though so I have been told ;)

Re: Extensions...
Tue, January 27, 2009 - 5:22 AMI don't see any problem with extensions. Most of the people who want long dreads on a whim have dread falls. As for the people who don't, have you considered the people who extend their dreads with their own previous set that they cut, or with their friend's old set? Could you fairly call that any less heartfelt? And all extensions do is add length. They still require care and love, just like the hair growing from your head.
Sub culture or not, it's just hair. Dreads mean different things to different people. Fashion for one person might be just as important as spirituality to the next. Happiness is paramount. Heartfelt journey is optional.

Tue, January 27, 2009 - 6:31 AMI like Laa's reply - a lot.
Axiom: "Dreads mean different things to different people."
Beautifully said, regardless of one's personal reasons for locking their hair.

Tue, January 27, 2009 - 9:24 AMinteresting opinion Laa... hadent really thought of that, guess i was thinking more along the line of synthetics . -
-
Re: Extensions...
Tue, January 27, 2009 - 4:48 PMThat's it exactly Laa...My dreads are considerably past my shoulders, and a little over half of that length is comprised of my old set of dreads, that I sewed back-in to my new ones...When I cut them off initially, I carefully stored them, and maintained them (while they were off)...it was a process of love...I love my locks...! -

Re: Extensions...
Tue, January 27, 2009 - 5:34 PMI never really thought about using your old set of dreads - that is cool! That would be funny on me though, I am going grey very quickly so the ones i would stictch on would be black and the top half grey. hee hee.

Re: Extensions...
Wed, January 28, 2009 - 10:16 AMI've used it twice so far - once to strengthen a weak spot on one dread (I didn't realize I was rubbing it on the seat of the car when driving) and one is an extension (if you can call it that). My hair is dark brown and her hair is blonde, so it's a pretty interesting look...but I like it. Plus I can see her - literally - when she isn't there. -

Re: Extensions...
Wed, January 28, 2009 - 10:23 AMthat's a really good idea for fixing weak spots! I'd never have thought of that!

Re: Extensions...
Mon, February 2, 2009 - 5:16 AMI did the same thing with my daughters hair. she's 3, and had one little dread going, but it was so fine at the roots that eventually it just fell out. she brought it to me one morning, and it was this little part of her - her first dread! - that I crocheted it into a baby dread I had been trying to start. now she calls that one "her dread" and I feel like I always have a piece of her with me. also, her hair is blonde and mine is dark brown, so the contrast looks cool.

Re: Extensions...
Fri, February 6, 2009 - 7:19 AMI know, I know! But, if you don't tell them what you're doing and they find out one day, they might be kind of creeped out, lol. I actually made a little dread out of all the hair I lost during the backcombing process. I didn't sew it on, but sometimes I use it to scare people into thinking one of my dreads fell off. ;) -

Re: Extensions...
Fri, February 6, 2009 - 8:16 AMheheh yeah Beck the hair-stalker LOL "ohh I feel so invaded!" LMAO LMAO LMAO they should feel honoured to be a part of my dreads! :P

Re: Extensions...
Sat, February 7, 2009 - 10:55 AMThey should feel honored that you're sneaking around their bathrooms and secretly gleaning their hairbrushes? Hmm. ;) I actually think I have some cat hairs embedded in my dreads. Maybe you can make some white tips out of the cat hair for your dreads. That would be kind of cool, lol. -

Re: Extensions...
Sat, February 7, 2009 - 3:22 PMMy cat is always trying to eat my hair!
I'm sure I have some of her hair in mine, though - there's cat hair everywhere!!! -

Re: Extensions...
Sat, February 7, 2009 - 5:43 PMIt just drifts listlessly through the air we breathe, lol. Yeah, sometimes one of my will randomly attack my head from behind, LOL. Or, sometimes, I'll feel random tugging on one of them and I'll turn around to see my cat doing the tugging, lol. He thinks my dreads are toys.... -

Re: Extensions...
Sun, February 8, 2009 - 8:13 AMLOL my 6mth old niece adores them...and the nose ring...ohhh her aunty's so much fun to play with...all those inbuilt toys LMAO :P

Re: Extensions...
Sun, February 8, 2009 - 8:01 PMMy one-year-old niece was staring at mine today. She knows the word hair so I said "hair" and pointed to them. She looked REALLY confused, LOL.
Cat hair extensions... I think that might be a first, lol! The white would be very unique and quite cool. If you save the hair and the dread extensions fall through, you can always make the sweater! Hehe.
You can also rob your friend's hair brushes, make dreads, and sell "real human hair" dreadlock extensions, haha! You might have to give your friends a cut though. ;) -

Re: Extensions...
Mon, February 9, 2009 - 9:17 AMLOL awww how cute :)
yeah never heard of anyone doing it before lol...worth a shot :P
LMAO nice heheheheh I saw a guy on ebay once trying to sell his old dreads...they weren't that spectacular, kinda messy actually, and his starting price was 300 bux...WTF? Dream on mate! LMAO -

Re: Extensions...
Mon, February 9, 2009 - 11:49 AMActually, that could be a really bad idea... What if it makes people allergic to you??? Maybe if you wash it REALLY well...
I guess his dreads had sentimental value, lol. But, seriously, you could easily make dread extensions from other people's hairbrush hair. I should have took my friend's hair that he chopped off! He had about 18 inches of really blonde hair! But, I didn't want to freak him out, haha. -

Re: Extensions...
Wed, January 28, 2009 - 3:08 PMi dont see anything wrong with real or fake extensions. to me they are just that, an extension of you hair having no affect on the symbolism(if any) of your dreads.
davids example is touching though =) -
