Moving right along

Heya guys,
I thought I'd share that I'm in the process of combing out most of my dreads now. It was time, and I've had them for over a year now. I never had a plan for how long I'd keep them, and it feels right. The process of combing them out slowly has been really good for me. I'm still keeping a few of them, and I'll still be around the tribes, but I feel it's time to move to a new step in my life. Thanks for all the help, guidance and chuckles. It's been a blast!
Much Love, Laa

How is the combing out working? Are you losing alot of hair?

I've lost a lot, but It's mostly damaged or shedded hair. I think I lost a little less than 1/4 of the hair in each dread, but I still have insanely thick (and surprisingly very healthy) hair. Over the long weekend I managed to comb out over almost 40 dreads, so I still have about 15 to go.

wow. whenerver people ask me if i could comb mine out i say, hell no! i am so surprised to hear you are doing it successfully..... do you mind answering a few questions for me.....

how tight were they when you started taking them out?
did you form them through backcombing, etc?

i am so interested in all this stuff.... i ahve always assumed that when i am done with my dreads, out comes the razor......

glad to hear that your hair is still healthy!

They were fairly tight. I started combing them out a a year and two months to the day, and I was a maintenance freak, to they were rolled, crocheted and felted along the way, making them pretty darn tight. And they were indeed started by back combing. The process was really slow. I would snip the bottom half inch of the dread off, then start working inch by inch gently catching and pulling out hair while holding onto the dread at a higher position to keep it from pulling my scalp. It took about 20-30 minutes per dread. The only parts that was very difficult were getting out the hair where loops had formed, and getting out the roots. Once I got them out I completely bathed the free hair in a leave in conditioner. When my entire head was finished I got the ends trimmed off (I probably had about 6 inches of breakage and dead ends) and used a hair cholesterol treatment to restore a lot of the dryness.
Hope that answered your questions some. I really didn't even think I would take them out either. Something just told me it was time.

LOL I had a similar problem to you Laa, when I cut-off my last set of dreads...cut them at about 4" from my scalp, and had to brush/comb out the 'nubs' LOL They were 3 year-old Dreads, so quite tight...Took Four hours of continual work, and left me with these massive blisters all over my hands, and I broke a metal-toothed comb multiple times lol :P

Dreads have been dreaded to me,starting out, figureing out, maintaining what I thought was me and now that my hair is so frizzed and seems not to be growing anymore due to damage,Im now considering just some braids and effects with maybe beads and color before I lose total control and go conservative.I just miss the feeling of length, thickness now gone to age, massive gray hair from massive stress.Any comments to keep me from going conservative again or improveming the quality of the damage will be most appreciated.
After springcouncil and rainbow gathering I may make that dreaded decision....help!

Sage- Why do you wanna go conservative? You'd be the last one I'd figure to go cutting your hair for anyone else's sake. For damage, maybe you wanna put some aloe gel on your hair. Have you tried anything like that? There are ways you can condition without leaving too much of the residue that makes the dreads fall out.
