Re: new dreads, in thailand - help!
Mon, February 2, 2009 - 2:58 AMwell, many of my friends have told me not to use any product,,I am debating whether or not to dread my whole head,I only have three right now,,but i know that I will not choose to use wax,,just use your hands to create the master peice,my suggestion is to get a crochet needle, with a fine tooth, and crochet like the demon,,if you are concerned with keeping them sleek.i also find that if I get my palms wet with water before i start to palm roll,I get better results,,but I can only suggest,in the long run, everyone's hair is different,,,different ph balances and everything,,find out what works best for your hair, and the most of luck to you ♥ -

Re: new dreads, in thailand - help!
Mon, February 2, 2009 - 5:13 AMCongrats on your new locks!
Don't worry - you don;t need any particular products. No wax required. In fact, wax (in my view) is not only un-necessary, but something you want to avoid. Slows the locking process and a host of other nasties.
Just wash with a residue-free shampoo and palm roll, and they'll turn out great. -

Re: new dreads, in thailand - help!
Mon, February 2, 2009 - 5:39 PMYou can use regular dish-washing detergent. I also recommend rinsing your hair after lathering, with a 10 to 1 mix of water and vinegar, then rinse with water as usual.

Re: new dreads, in thailand - help!
Tue, February 3, 2009 - 5:01 AMYeah, dish soap and vinegar work well. You can also order products on-line from KnottyBoy or DreadHeadHQ. Dr. Bronners isn;t actually residue-free, but it works well. Neutrogena has a non-residue (I think they call it anti-residue) formula, too.
You can also go to your local HFS and look thru the shampoos. Many will say if they are residue-free.

Fri, March 6, 2009 - 7:11 PMAgreed, you don't *need* wax. Can you imagine if you carried a blob of it around in your palm all day, what kind of horrors it would attract?

Re: new dreads, in thailand - help!
Sat, February 28, 2009 - 11:03 AMMy guess would be they did your dreads using a crochet hook right? Mine was done that way (but in Bali) and I only use the crochet hook for all my maintenance. No wax.
Get a nice soap and avoid the shampoos. And palm roll after you shower (after drying your dreads).
