Weird "S" shaped loops in locks

Hey guys and girls,

I have had my hair locked up for almost two months now, and I used the backcombing method. I absolutely love them, but I am having a few issues. The past few weeks I have noticed that some of them, mostly in the back near my neck, have developed these weird "S" shapes in the middle of them. It looks like part of it was pulled tight, and the rest bunched up around it- like if you snag a piece of yarn or something. Some are big, and some are small- I will post pictures this evening so you all can see what I am talking about.

Has anyone else had this problem? I'd hate to have to brush all of them out as they have already gotten pretty tight. Here is a little background information: My locks come down past my shoulders, I have naturally thick, curly (loose curls) caucasian hair, I use Knotty Boy wax about once a week and will occasionally use Knotty Boy tightening gel after showers. I wash it about every 3-5 day s(with Dr. Bronners and Knotty Boy bar soap) and I usually pull it in a pony tail or low bun for work.

stay knotty,

The description of your hair and what is going on is EXACTLY like mine. Long curly hair, weird S shapes, even used the same Knotty Boy products.

What is happening is your locks are doing what they are suppose to be doing...they are locking up. But since locks have a mind of their own, they don't lock evenly. One side is locking faster than the other side. Have patience little grasshopper, it took my babies almost a year and a half before they all evened out. I have been dreaded since April 2006 and still have a couple that are all curvey.

I think this happens more with our hair type, thick and curly than with someone who has straight hair. But on the bright side, our hair type does dread easier!

here's how I tackled it: pull the dread a little to try to straighten that area, then backcomb a little, then crochet that loop in. you don't have to crochet it so it's super tight, just get the hair in so it's not loopy like that. go in with the crochet hook opposite the side that the loop is sticking out, and just pull it in with little strokes. then alternate and go in from the other side of the dread to even it out.

i have tons of those 's' shaped loops you speak of. but my hair was terribly thin and straight. i used to hate them, and wish all kinds of awful dready palmrolling crocheted deaths apon them! lol. then one day it just kinda clicked that they were part of my babies' personality. its been a little over a year, and i still love each and every loop and curve :-)

I used to have those lil' loops in my locks, and now it's down to only one or 2 that barely resemble what they used to look like (thankfully 'tis much improved)!! Around the 6th month I started using dreadheadhq's locking tool that's used somewhat like a crochet hook. I'd get the bumpy part that's sticking out of the dread (using the tool), and pull it through the dread (kinda tucking those silly parts in), continuing 'till the dread had a kinda 'uniformly straight-ish' look. It's helpful to palm roll it (often), wax it, re-do it after a wash, or whatever it takes, but eventually you CAN 'fix' those 's' shaped thangs IF that is your desire (as was mine)!

    Best of luck! :)

My loops and flaps have been in mine for 5yrs now. Some people have better luck then me trying to crochet dreads. Now ive just got use to them and wrap some in yarn/monofilament and hang something off em':>
