I recently started dreads but I am kinda of worried about ants getting into them. My house has a lot of tiny black ants and I can't get rid of them and now I worry that they will crawl into my dreads... has anyone ever had an issue with ants or other bugs?

Thu, August 27, 2009 - 1:55 AMjust spray frequently with tea tree oil - it repels insects, plus ants hate water, so just make sure you continue to shower daily and wash your hair fortnightly (at the least).

Thu, August 27, 2009 - 5:56 AMresearch the tea tree oil; it's great for bug problems but boots estrogen levels, so women at risk for certain cancers shouldn't use it, and it should never be used on children (it's caused boys aged four to eight grow breasts).
other thatn that, i have ants and haven't had a problem; their food stuff isn't on your head. -

Thu, August 27, 2009 - 1:41 PMI wash with a tea tree oil shampoo so that's good. I felt like maybe the ants would look at my hair and think "Mmmmm, that looks like a nice nest!" :)

Wed, September 16, 2009 - 2:00 PMants ? no .. Ive heard head lice can cause problems though.. make sure what ever shampoo your using is no residue because if i conditions it will defeat your dreads -

Wed, September 16, 2009 - 2:47 PMWith lice, i have had a miserable experience with thim. My daughter brought them home from school. They seemed to be ever so resistant with tea-tree oil or anything else i tried - i even tried that market product "delacet" which is meant to be great for dreads. None of it worked. Then Beksta told me to get some neem seed oil and put some in my shampoo and wash it . Worked like a treat. I still use the shampoo/neem seed oil mix for my weekly washings. Have been using it for my daughter too (non-dreadhead).

When I lived in Florida we had thousands and thousands of those things in our house (annoying and almost impossible to get rid of, but they are totally harmless).. I never had any issues with getting them in my dreads. Any kind of food left out was another story... =/ -
