I was just wondering, since everyone is different with their styles of dreads and what they put in them...after all dreads are always unique looking on every person =] I have some glass beads in mine (only a few weeks old but they're helping tighten up the dreads...i move them around every now and then), and in the future (once the rubber bands are gone from my roots) I'm going to put some colored string at the tops of a few to add some more color to my hair and help the roots dread up...
i was wondering what you guys have or once had in your dreads, anything...let me hear about it!
peace and love all

Re: What adorns your beautiful dreads??!!
Tue, August 28, 2007 - 6:29 PMMy first set started with wooden beads, then glass beads, then a couple plastic silver painted ones. Then I combed all but 10 out at 5-6mo.
My second set has had wooden beads (to hide the bands at the tips. Those are out now.), and then a hair wrap (reeeeeeaaaallly bad loop!), and now nothing. I try to only wear headbands and bandanas on "bad dread days" usually the 2-3 days before washing. I'm trying to let these be more "free" and light than my old ones. -

Re: What adorns your beautiful dreads??!!
Wed, August 29, 2007 - 8:28 PMWell..... (reaches into the mass of mayhem)
two silver rings, one with stars on it, the other with a piece of black onyx
two large barnacles from the oceans, and two hermit crab shells (which, through natural erosion have become perfect beads)
a long hemp wrap with a piece of quartz crystal from tibet wrapped at the end.
two short feathers
a piece of hematite
three small, thin metal beads which adorn the ends or the thinner sections of my dreads
five wooden beads, one of which is made of bamboo
a piece of bone cut into a perfect, white bead
Lots of string and rainbow colored sewing thread from all the strange little things that have been in my hair over the years
Until recently, when they broke and/or fell out: a sand dollar, and a glass bead made from the stem of a shattered pipe (adorned with a cute little frog. Called it my "tree frog")
... and, dreads from four other really special friends dreaded in too :-)
Some people don't know whether to be amazed or disgusted by these mutant dreadies.... -

Re: What adorns your beautiful dreads??!!
Thu, August 30, 2007 - 1:40 PMSome silver Filigree beads scattered throughout, spinny dice, a tiny glass bead or two, two tiny silver bells, a couple funky toerings, a baby ring. Formally; parts of a grateful dead spinner ring (it resided on "The Grateful Dread", my only named knap), big glass beads, bone beads, wood beads, bottle caps, lighter tops, and just about anything else I found pretty or different.
I met a girl who had a fork in her dreads once. -

a pink ribbon
a blue one but it fell out

a safety pin with a bead on it
some copper wire out of an old tv my friend pulled apart

Re: What adorns your beautiful dreads??!!
Thu, September 13, 2007 - 9:09 PMAt the moment... nothing! It's sad to think that my hair is bare at the moment, but it's too much hassle for me to take it all out, and then put it all back in when I have clinic at Uni, so I'm totally bare for the next few months. I'm bargaining with the administrator to let me put a few wraps back in, he seems to be yielding.
Usually I have multi-colored from embroidery cotton or hemp yarn in there with bells, charms or beads hanging on the end, gold filigree dread 'beads' I bought from ebay and random beads and bobbles in there I even I have the few faux leather thong wraps in there. When I dress it up I add ribbons, flowers and feathers, etc. I like to dress it up a lot :P

Re: What adorns your beautiful dreads??!!
Thu, September 20, 2007 - 5:26 PMNothing permanent, since mine are still in the developmental period, but just for tying up, i tell you...craft stores are wonderful places for dreddies! I have found a long strand of little embroidered yellow flowers, ribbons, lace, tassles....yummmm..and last i went i was eyeing these things that were meant to hold knitting needles together, these cool brightly colored coils.
my favorite bead in my last set was a little sun pendant i attached to the bottom of one...ooh, and an amber teardrop with a little bug inside it :)

Re: What adorns your beautiful dreads??!!
Fri, September 21, 2007 - 3:07 PMNothing right now but I am making some dread beads/twists/spirals and stuff...would anyone like some? I would be happy to send some out =)
Also, an idea I have for Halloween is to make little snake heads in different poses and attach them to my ends to pull off a Medusa look...I could even pose them with some wire either in or wrapped around the dread. -

Re: What adorns your beautiful dreads??!!
Sat, September 22, 2007 - 4:51 PMAll sorts of different shapes, colors etc...I guess I could take requests. =) Also, I will try to get some good photos and post them to my deviantart and then I could link them here.
This might take a bit of time. :\ If anyone wants them, you could just tell me what your style is and some of the colors you wear or like a lot...it could be a surprise. Anyone have any ideas about how to do this?
Honestly, I am super lazy. :D

Re: What adorns your beautiful dreads??!!
Wed, September 26, 2007 - 10:52 AMI thought I would reply to my own post haha, more of an update of the things I've found to put in my hair...Since posting this, I've added colored wraps to the roots of a few of my dreadies in brown, blue, tan and white, a few shells, natural wood beads in different shades of brown, and a few pretty wooded red oriental beads my mom bought for me =] (she loves the fact that she can buy me silly things to put in my hair now), and I bought some pretty colored ribbons for use later =] I wanted to thank you all for your replies and good ideas...I wish I could find snake vertebrae for my hair, but I don't know anywhere that would sell it in my neck of the woods...Any ideas?
Peace and love =]

Re: What adorns your beautiful dreads??!!
Tue, October 2, 2007 - 9:54 PMWell let's see I have a silver penny on the end of one of my dreads. A glass bead on another. Then on one of my larger dreadies I have multiple small hematite and colored glass beads sewn into the dreadie which makes that dread look really far out. It doesn't really look like a dread sometimes. I also have the tip of another dread beaded with tiny wooden beads with a large wooden bead above it. I had my girlfriend use fishing line to sew the ebads in so it wouldn't degrade as quickly. Oh and I also just put in a little metal ring on one of them because a friend gave it to me.
I used to have some more glass beads in my hair but I've broken quite a few.

Re: What adorns your beautiful dreads??!!
Wed, October 3, 2007 - 7:56 AMLarge wooden beads that are now part of the dread. A smaller blue flower glass bead and some unique African beads that I threaded onto hemp rope and wove onto a dread.
Going to get some color on them in a few weeks for the first time and hopefully they won't mess up any of the beads. -

Re: What adorns your beautiful dreads??!!
Wed, October 3, 2007 - 9:15 PMwhat I have always thought would be a wonderful idea would be to incorporate a small container, say a small phrama liquid container into one's larger dreads. it would be nice to have a stash box in your hair. -

Re: What adorns your beautiful dreads??!!
Sun, October 7, 2007 - 10:00 AMHa! My dreads have been searched before going into a show...
I was medusa for Halloween a couple years ago and I put all of them up on top of my head and then used thin copper wire to wrap around them base to tip. I could then angle them up, around, whatever.
Right now I have a couple of glass beads given to me by friends, a ceramic one i made, a peyote stitch a friend made (www.enchantedtree.com), and i did have 4 shells but 2 have fallen out, I also have a small copper bead from another friend in there. -

Re: What adorns your beautiful dreads??!!
Sun, October 7, 2007 - 8:32 PMYeah it was really odd...It was in a rough neighborhood in Vegas and i think they were used to searching for guns etc, not hippies. It took forever to get in the door!
