New Dread Paranoia

Hey, I've just put in my own dreads two days ago all by myself and now I'm just feeling horribly paranoid about the whole affair.

To start, I accidentally used petroleum based wax (the package was in German and I didn't recognize it for what it was until I realized the effect it was having and then it was too late...)

Now, all my backcombing seems to have gone to shit and while they haven't fallen apart yet, I'm afraid it may only be a matter of time and the roots aren't knotted at all. To try to counteract the wax, I took a shower wearing a nylon and rinsed my hair with salt and baking soda water (no shampoo. I can't find non-residue shampoo here in Switzerland and I can't purchase things online, so I'm not gonna bother with it for the time being. At least until I get back stateside in a year.)

This seems to have helped a little with the horrible greasiness of excess wax, but I'm still really worried and I really am not masochistic enough to completely redo them by myself and I have no one available to help me. I'm taking it as a personal challenge to make them work, but I worry that they won't lock up on their own, despite accounts I've read to the contrary.

Any suggestions would be seriously appreciated here.

Personally, I always say to not use any wax or other product to dread hair. Wax can attract dirt which can be locked into the dreads permanently. Wax can also actually hinder the locking process. What wax does is lock the hair into its present position, but what is suppose to happen is over time the hair will twist and knot and lock together with movement over time. I'm not really sure how you can get rid of the wax though.

But once you do get rid of the wax, I'm guessing you may be left with undreaded hair. You might just have to start from the beginning. I would recommend not using any product at all and just working the sections together over time naturally with back combing and palm rolling.

My personal experience is to just go completely natural. They will be pretty puffy and fuzzy for a good long while, but after 9 months to a year (depending on your hair type) they will finally start to lock up and look good.

    Hope this helps~

OK you need to get rid of that wax asap - the baking soda washes will help (also use vinegar rinse after the baking soda), and use HOT HOT water to help melt that wax...getting it out asap should hopefully counter what the wax has done to date, and allow you the opportunity to lock-up :)
