I am seriously considering dreads. I'm a stay at home mom and a belly dancer so I have no boss to keep happy. There was just a couple things I was worried about before I take the plunge.
The first one is will my climate affect my dreads. I live it Washington, on the east side of the mountains. It's a desert, so there is about 6 months out of the years that it's very hot and then about 6 months that it's bitter cold. Will that effect how they hold and how comfortable they are to have?
the other question is had anyone ever effectively gotten rid of lice while having dreads, and how? I do not have lice but I have a young daughter and I will be very lucky indeed if she never brings the icky creatures home from school at least once.
Thank you so much for your help. I'm very excited to take the plunge but I wanted to do all the research needed first.

Re: I have some quistions.
Sun, February 1, 2009 - 2:00 PMif its hot and humid, you'll notice a little bit more... i have no issue with the cold and my hair...
as far as the lil bugs... be vigilant and make sure the lil one doesnt bring any home, and if they do, treat the whole house several times quickly...

Re: I have some quistions.
Mon, February 2, 2009 - 4:16 AMMandy, I live in Australia, and we have a really dry heat here...have never had any issues except a little extra frizz when it's especially hot...which you can always find other ways to maintain...heat isn't a problem at all (except for the fact that my scalp gets super hot in that kinda weather)
Lice...I've never had them, but have known other dreadheads who have, and they managed to get rid of them (and then continue to keep them away) by adding a few drops of Neem Seed Oil to their shampoo :)) -

Re: I have some quistions.
Mon, February 2, 2009 - 1:37 PMHow are you going in the heat? Were those bushfires anywhere near you? My partner's parents live in Cranbourne and they said it has been pretty hectic with all the power shortages and everything.
I've been down there once in 34 degree heat. I must say it was only equivalent to that of a 25 degree day here. You want to talk about humidity? Queensland gets pretty bad. Give me dry heat any day.
I was told the other week by a lady with dreads that she did get lice and the only way she could get rid of them was to go on a 3day course of sulphur tablets, then off for 3days and back on once more for 3 days. I have young kids too, I found with undreaded hair that shaving cream is awesome - it kills the egges and the lice. Don't know how it would go in undreaded hair though. There is also this lice prevantative that i found on the net. Think I found it on the Dreadhead site. I havent tried it yet.
15 drops Eucalyptus,
5 drops marjoram,
5 drops rosemary,
5 drops lavender,
5 drops peppermint,
3/4cup pure unscented coconut oil (before melting),
1/4cup dreadhead dread soap
mix it all together. apply to dreads and lather. leave in for 30 minutes and rinse thoroughly. wash as normal. -

Re: I have some quistions.
Mon, February 2, 2009 - 2:23 PMWe get bush fires around here about every other year. It's only really scary if you live up on the hill. I live in the middle of a town and I doubt the fire would jump the river.
I would take try heat over humidity any day too. I'm not complaining about the weather here, just making sure there's no knarly side effects to having dreads in a hot environment.
Your dreads are very cute by the way. How long was your hair before you dreaded? -

Re: I have some quistions.
Mon, February 2, 2009 - 7:17 PMThanks. My dreads are only one month old, they shrunk about an inch and a half in length. My hair wasnt really that long to begin with. I did post some more pics of them today. They had a bath yesterday and I am trying not to put wax on them, so they look a bit frazzled. I also, can not make up my mind on how I want the ends. Whispy or blunt? I did crochet the ends of a couple at the front but I think the blunt ends look funny on my length hair. The whispy tips look more natural right now. When I get some length, I will probably then start crocheting the ends.
So where abouts do you live? Sounds nice. -

Re: I have some quistions.
Mon, February 2, 2009 - 7:33 PMyeah dry heat's not as bad as humid heat...although when all the power goes off and you got no AC or fans or anything...arrrghhhh! :P
No the majority of the really big bushfires were down in Gippsland, so a few hours from here, but we had a few deliberately lit ones (what is wrong with people???) maybe 10-15 mins up the road :S
Kath - yeah I did the same thing with my tips...tried one or two with rounded-ends, but decided it didn;t suit me, so all mine are now wispy (but dreaded)...oooh they tickle! Occasionally I freak out when in bed cos I think there's a spider on me lol :P -

Re: I have some quistions.
Mon, February 2, 2009 - 7:40 PMSpiders. hee hee. My second oldest daughter Sinead (2) thought I had a snake on my head today. hee hee, doesnt help that last night all I dreamt about was snakes, snakes and more snakes. When my hubby went to give me a kiss goodbye this morning - I though he was a snake and flipped out. Ah well... -

Re: I have some quistions.
Mon, February 2, 2009 - 8:16 PMI live in eastern Washington. Washington is so black and white. The west side is very humid with mild summers and mild winters and the east side is dry dry dry with hot summers and freezing winters. It's literally a wasteland. Which pretty much just means so natural tree's. None of the tree's you see there are actually from that area.
Lol, funny, I dreamed about snakes too, but that's probably because one of mine almost got lose right before I went to bed.
So how exactly do you crochet a dreadlock? I know how to crochet but I'm confused as to how you practice that sort of thing on your hair. I'm sorry for all the goofy questions. I want to go into this knowing all I can.
